school me in turbo tech for the 3b
so heres the scenario..
I've been hunting around for a turbo for my 3b (to go with the flipped stock manifold ive got) on ebay and various performance forums.. i've figured that instead of risking a 2nd hand turbo from ebay or off a forum b(that could require a costly rebuild) it would be more worth while getting a turbo from an auto performance shop (possibly in better condition and with warranty, etc).. so.. armed with the recommended Garrett turbos T3 or T28 and A/R ratios (.42/.48) I ask them what they have which would be suitable.. now this is where it gets sticky.. talking to the guy there and he's trying to tell me that the numbers i'm telling him are way too restrictive for the 3b.. That i need a bigger turbo.. and that it'll never work.. I dont want to be forced to take his recommendation and get a turbo that doesn't work. what information can i arm myself with prior to our next meeting (no time soon) so that I can persuade him that the collective brain of ih8mud know a bit more about this particular engine and turbo options than he does? I told him its for a 3.4l 4cyl diesel and it took him a while to understand that. it was as if he had not heard of or see that engine before. any help you guys could provide would be appreciated. thanks andrew __________________ '84 BJ42 with all the fruit - fun to drive 7 days a week! 1GB Free Image hosting @ PHAT42.COM! oh and i have been reading as many 3b turbo, home brew and junkyark turbo threads as I can find to get a good spread of potential suitable turbos.. so i'm more specifically looking for information to argue or persuade this guy that a turbo from a 2l petrol will suit the 3b perfectly.

talking to mechanics!......
theyre not all bad, but a good percentage. stick with what you got for numbers, or reccomend he checks on a turbo ratio calculator on the net, if he doesnt have a clue about the 3B maybe thats a sign of the amount of knowledge your dealing with. I find most often its easier to tell these type of people what i want without elaborating and getting their unhelpful opinions. And then if they persist on being nosey i ramble a bunch of details about things they probaly dont know about, when they realize someone might call them on what they dont really know, they often shut it and get you the part. __________________ 83BJ60,Merkur turbo+intercooled,SOA,aussie locker Custom bumpers,,4.88's, longs and poly rears.RDB's +4runner calipers, parabolics in front, 39.5 IROK's on DC-1's 92FJ80 stock with the damage multiplied. 350 tbi, ome3" (JUST WRITTEN OFF) |

hey i just put a toyota supra(3L gasser engine) turbo on my 3b bought a 13bt manifold from gscruiserparts.com so the turbo would bolt right in. It is awsome i get 5lbs boost at 1200rpm 10lbs boost at 2000 and at 3000 waste gate opens at 15lbs boost
So to all thoes nay sayers of the supra turbo shut it up it works come check it out an have a beer over at my house if u still a non belever (ill show u it works) i say a diesel just isnt the same without a turbo. The turbo makes the 3b so much more responsive and lively and highway passing is a brezze the truck just wants to giver i hope to have pics up soon so from what ive driven and my experiences (not opinion) small turbo good fast spool and boost but it dies out at higher rpm (more heat less boost/insufficient boost) large turbo boost is not as fast 5lbs at 1000-1200 but at higher rpm 1700-3000 10-15lbs boost the engine just hauls ace 5th goes up even the steepest grade i can throw at it with the turbo i can even spin the tires (N/A 3b could never light them up) Last edited by Big Blue 84BJ60; 05-01-08 at 07:52 PM. |

It sounds like he wants to give you a turbo from a 3.4L petrol, which you'll be lucky to make 10psi before the rev limit on. PS. T25 with a 0.49 exhaust side is comparable to a T3 with a 0.42 A/R exhaust side. Forget the T28. __________________ VOODOO Engineering: Doing it first time with one clay doll, not four times with two. |

yeh they are mainly a ricer shop but the dude said they are doing more and more diesels these days.. most of them would be 3l 6cyl engines..
i think i might of typo'd t28 instead of t25.. anyway.. thanks for the ideas so far. __________________ '84 BJ42 with all the fruit - fun to drive 7 days a week! 1GB Free Image hosting @ PHAT42.COM! Join the crew @ phat42! my 'shed' 3rdrock4x4 club |
