Swapping 3B, anything to watch for?
I'm going to swap the tired 3B in my 82 BJ42 with a fresher motor. I took a quick look in the FSM and didn't see anything specific about removing and reinstalling an engine.
The 3B that's coming out is the older style, without the "3B" cast into the thermostat housing. The one I'm installing is the newer type. From everything I've read the new one should bolt right in though I may need to use my old engine mounts. (The "new" engine came from Lumpy's old 60.) Is there anything I should pay special attention to when doing the swap to make my life easier? Any vehicle I've ever swapped engines in always has a few ways to save time or avoid screwing up something that will have to be re-done. I figured it would be best to ask here before I jump into the swap near the end of this month. |

Probably easier to pull engine and tranny and then mate the two outside of the truck and reinstall as a unit. You should be able to do it in a day. Obviously any electrics need to be swapped back as the BJ42 is 24v and the '60 would have been 12v.

So it's easier to mate the engine and tranny to the transfer case when dangling from a chain than it is to mate the engine to the bell housing? When I've swapped engines with manual transmissions in the past it always seemed easier to me to leave the bell housing and clutch linkage in place instead of disconnecting, reconnecting, possibly bleeding hydraulics, etc. Last edited by RufusTheDufus; 06-15-08 at 11:02 AM. i just seperated the motor from tranny and then reinstalled the new motor, did this on my 60 and on a friends 72. worked good for us. It is a pretty straight forward swap.
