Intercooler and EGT nuumbers

Does anybody have some real world numbers on drops on EGTs with an intercooler??

I am looking at one of these off of ebay to throw on my HJ61.

intercooler

The quality is OK and the size is about right. I am planning on a custom grill as there is no way it will fit with the AC and I have already been told by the that if the AC goes, she won't ride with me again...

I am not looking for great power gains, just want to lower EGTS.

How did you arrive at the 'size is about right' estimate? The price sure seems right to me

I don't know if my numbers are correct:

600 cfm flow rate is 16990L per minute

4L engine at 2500rpms is 10000L per minute

With a .5 drop at 15psi

It sounds OK to me. I guess the bigger you go the better cooling you could have.

I put one sorta like that in my 45 with a turboed 3b. ( I got it from a place called ssautochrome, was 200 bucks to my door, so not as cheap as that one, but it was a couple years ago ) and I was actually pretty surprized by the egt numbers I saw. hills I used to be at 1050 1100 on I was well under a thousand...

so, I turned up the fuel screw some more....

OK, that's what I figured how you came up with that... except that it's actually half that as there is no intake during the combustion phase

Anyway seapotato got a similar one and it seems to work so there you go with a practical answer, intercool away, heck I may even do this myself, doesn't sem so hard to do... Keep us posted, that engine of yours is as large as mine, you may learn some very valuable things for us HDJ81 owners out there!

Good catch on the combustion!!

I think it will work OK. I ordered the cooler so I will post up progress as I go.

I got a similar Ebay intercooler on my 12ht powered 45 and i was pleasantly surprised how well it works. I don't have temp. numbers here, but there is hardly any smoke anymore and after a 5 hour drive on the German autobahn (and i don't drive slow) the cool side of the intake piping was really cold. Before the intercooler i couldn't even put my hand on the intake runner because of the heat.
Again, i don't have numbers, but i'm sure those el cheapo intercoolers work.

Good luck with yours,

Mark

from 15 to 30 F drop your intercooler rocks .. I never notice a real drop in the EGT per se .. but I actually note that the boost goes up 2 PSI aprox .. and sure it means less EGT .. when I'm at HW speeds ..

Hi there, nice intercooler you got there

I have a similar one but a bit larger though I think.

made a thread about it, itīs in my sig.

The thing I noticed most was the torque increase, and as a result I donīt have to work the engine as much to get power on hills etc. so yea it will definitely lower your EGTs. besides, if the air in the charge going into the cylinder is colder itīs safe to assume that the air out should be colder as well?

hereīs what the thing looks like:

P.s. donīt forget to make some edges on the pipes that the silicone hoses go up on, blew mine off at only 12 psi :P

I actually got the intercooler for $55!! All the piping and silicone and clamps came from the same Ebay store. All told, with shipping and taxes I was just under $400US. They nailed me $150 for shipping...

Thanks for the tip on the rolled edge. I would have liked to gone bigger but I didn't want to lose my AC. As it is, it is going to be a tight fit.

That's a great write up. I don't know how I missed that in my searches. Have you noticed an increase in engine (coolant) temperature because of blocking that much radiator?

quite the opposite, the temp needle rarely goes over the first line, and Iīve had my foot flat on the floor doing 20 mph in heavy snow for a few minutes at a time (the temp was like 10F but hey ).

also when towing my EGT temps donīt rise as fast.

all in all I think an intercooler is probably one of the best mods you can do for this engine...

That is great news!! As stated above, I am really hoping this drops my EGTs more then adds power when cruising down the road... I hope to have it in by easter weekend and take it on a road trip.

Brad, did you finish the install of the intercooler? If so, how is it working out for you? Are you as happy with it as "Talos" and "Troopie arte with their intercooled 12H-T's."

Post edit: Ooops! Never mind I found your install thread. (I am such a damn newbie)...

Yup, as you found the intercooler is installed and we love it. I don't have the tire roasting abilities as some have posted but I believe that is due to the auto. I am "almost" never wishing for more power (we all want more power).

We just finished a 12000km trip to Alaska and I and I would not wanted to do it without the intercooler. The mountains would have been real struggle.

As far as quality goes, everything is holding up fine.

I saw this image of your rig on some other thread...

That is what I want my 60 to look like when it grows up (12HT and all).

Who made the body armor?

Custom bumpers, sliders, swingouts all made by a buddy and myself. Buy a tube bender and make your own, IMO. It pays for itself and you get exactly what you want.
