head gasket?
My 2H has been pumping coolant into the overflow tank, filling it and then sending it on it's way on to the road.
When the truck cools, it does not suck the coolant back into the radiator. In fact it seems to still have pressure, even when sitting for quite a while (hours). Eventually, I can open the cap to add coolant. I do not have any coolant in my oil and no oil in my coolant. The 60 does not run hot (as long as I add coolant every couple of days) Some moisture on start up (to be expected in New England during the winter) but no white smoke while running. I changed the radiator cap, still the same. I read that a bad head gasket could result in exhaust leaking into the cooling system pushing coolant out. Is that possible on a 2H? Any other suggestions on what is causing this? You would need to pressure test the system to see if it holds pressure.
What's happening to the water temp? If combustion gasses are getting into the coolant IMOP the temp would skyrocket. Maybe there is a blockage in the return from the rad, causing the pressure to get higher with the restriction and overcoming the rad cap. I would start with a pressure test and a flush of the system. __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |

yes
check overflow tank for gaseous bubbles, when the 2h is running. |

I started the 60 up this morning, 13 degrees F, no problems.
After letting it run for a while, coolant started flowing into the overflow reservoir. No bubbles, radiator not even hot to the touch. I drove 2 hours to Massachusetts on Sunday and 2 hours back without overheating issues. I'm at a loss as to what is going on. __________________ JoeTLCA # 6363 Yankee Toys Gotham City Land Cruisers Connecticut Open Access Land Trust Northeast Association 4 Wheel Drive Clubs Tread Lightly - Tread Trainer National Off-Highway Conservation Council 1977 FJ55 - for fun (x2) 1979 FJ40 - the wife's 1986 HJ60 - my dd 2007 FJC - my second dd? |

Cooling system not properly 'bled'? I've known a few guys with air in their system who have experienced similar symptoms as you...a head gasket on a 2H is an uncommon failure point. Something else would have to have happened to cause it (freezing temps with no coolant, etc.). Do you know the vehicle's recent history?
