Something out of a diesel Hilux/Surf/Prado is the easiest. The earlier models in your approx year had L, 2L ,3L and 5L diesels, the later models have 1KZ T and 1KD FTV.

Its best to buy the whole engine gearbox assembly. They use G52 and R150? R151 gearboxes but Im sure there are others.
I dont know if the earleir models had autos,I think they would be fairly slow.

Im not trying to get rid of you but there are sites such as ToyotaDiesel.com Forums - Powered by vBulletin that are more attuned to your type of swap.
Its mainly Landcruiser diesels here which share some of the Hilux diesels .

Lots of things can be made to fit, but do your homework first. Any conversion is going to be time consuming and costly. If you do the work yourself, allow several months of evenings and weekends. If you're paying for the work to be done, then you'd be best off buying a diesel truck instead of doing a conversion unless you want something really new converted.

Few shops will provide an estimate for this kind of work since it's very specialized and very time consuming, so expect - in most cases - to pay time and materials. Make sure you're clear about a timeline for completion.

Save your time and money, buy something with a diesel in it already and rebuild it if you need to. Is an 88 4Runner really the platform you want to spend thousands throwing a diesel into?

well my wife is wants to put a diesel in to our FJ80 and to make expeditions and camping trips easier, it would be nice to have both rights Diesel at the same time so we only need to carry 1 type of fuel.

What engine is the wife going to use for her conversion?

Taking a his and hers expedition rig is a good way to decide who the best driver is

You might want to talk to Rob Lassman about this. He goes by Radd Cruisers and is a vendor here on 'Mud.

Converting a vehicle that came in a diesel version is somewhat easier than retro-fitting one (not that the Surf/4runner didn't also come with a diesel, it's just that the 2LTE is not really a very good engine to trade "up" to).
