It will fit better than a cummins. The B engines were the 1st diesels that landcruiser's got and the 13BT is a turbo version.
There are also the H 6 cyl engines

Does anyone know where I could pick up a 13B-T at and the cost?

What is your requirement for "better"? Reliability, parts availability, engine availability, power, noise level, adaptability? What are you doing with your rig (planned usage)? If you are SOA already then a cummins will probably fit fine. There is a local who is going to put a 4bt in his FJ40 in the next month or two and his rig is mostly a trail rig.

I think the torque figures on a diesel are more important than the hp numbers.

13bt: 118hp 210lb.tq
1KZT-E: 129hp 253lb.tq (numbers converted)
4bt: 105hp 268lb.tq
4bta: 120hp 305lb.tq

4bta are intercooled where the 4bt is not, but you can intercool it just like any diesel. I'm pretty sure you can get more power out of a 4bt than a 13bt. From quick research it looks like the cummins will out power the 1KZT-E and wiring up a 4bt would be easier than the 1KZ too. But the 4bt is not for everyone. Some don't like the noise or the vibs. Both can be controlled but it seems the toyota diesels are quiter and don't shake as much.

I've put a 4bta in an FJ60. I chose a cummins because they are damn good engines, make some good power, availibility here in the states for engines and parts, easy to mod, and because I was infected with the diesel bug.

I am SOA but you see there is not enough room to run a intercooler on a 4BT in a FJ40, Cummins are great but they so freakin loud. My rigs is mainly used for Overlanding so I am most interested in MPG and a comfortable on road ride, but when the time comes I need enough power to go over anything in the way. JONNFJ

One vote for 13bt. Sweet engine and reliable. Ciaran Wilson @ Cruiserland has one. Search his name here and you'll find his #.

Really? The 4bt is shorter than the I-6 that was originally in it. It seems like there would be extra space to have and intercooler fit once a I-4 is put in. Were you planning not to move the drivetrain; I could see how that could be a problem. Were you planning on running a mech fan or electric? I think anyone going from a gasser to a diesel needs to plan sound deadening into a swap since these older diesels are louder than gassers. There are some good products out on the market now-days. I've noticed that my 4bta is a little quieter than a regular 4bt. It has a slight lower compression ratio so that might help. There is a dodge durango on 4btswaps.com that reports a comfortable in-cab volumn level with his 4bt transplant so the volumn can be controlled but yes it will never be as quite a today's new diesel engines.

there are a lot of kzt motors here in Costa Rica, they are much MUCH quieter than the 4bt, based on my experience.

and they get very good efficiency and have lots of get up and go... but it feels more like a gasser (peak torque feels like higher rpm) than a 4bt.

so take all that into account

Except for a passing reference by Rosco, why is there so far, no discussion of the 2H or 12H-T? While neither are intercooled, the latter has piston-skirt cooling. Canadian support for the former (and it can be turboed fairly easily), though it has a stiffer block and no sleeves. You can get both engines from Aus easily. $OR sells "front clips", but for WAY too much (~$9,000) but what else is new?

even with no muffler the 13bt runs fairly quiet.

The 4BD1T has boatloads more than the 1KZ-TE, I have a 4BD1T in a 2.3 ton truck, my brother has 1KZ-TE in a 1700kg truck. There's no contest regarding power or torque, for some reason toyotas don't seem to live up to the numbers.
The put out less torque in factory configuration than a cummins 4BT, because they're tuned to not smoke.
Intercooling or not is up to the installer. I'd suggest you do for any turbo engine.

But both the Isuzu and the cummins are large and heavy engines, the Toy 13Bt would be mean a lot less modification to your vehicle. Being direct injection the 13BT will be a lot more fuel efficient than the 1KZ-TE while starting easier too.
