HDJ81 Radiator Drain Plug

I've been looking for it from above and below and I can't find any likely candidates for a spot where I can drain the coolant. I must be looking in all the wrong places, and I suspect I probably have to remove something first. Any tips would be appreciated.

Just a guess. It will be on the bottom corner opposite of your lower rad hose. If it isn't there, then you may have a reman rad and your lower rad hose will become your main drain. Not a bad thing, as it sure is a lot quicker than those littel rad drains. Just put a big plastic pan underneath and pull the hose off. Make sure you are facing away from the coolant flow and make sure you promptly clean up and spilled coolant to protect neighbours' dogs and cats.

Weird, even though I have instant eMail notification turned on under 'thread subscription', I don't get the emails anymore telling me there has been a reply to the threads I'm watching. My email address has not changed, I'll check my profile later, maybe it's somehow been corrupted.

Yeah, I seem to recall the lower rad hose is in a tight spot too, but I'll go revisit it with that in mind and if I can get at it, just do it that way. I've got a couple of the big rubbermaid bin lids on standby that will collect the fluid, which I'm assuming could be as much as 17 or 18 litres?

Too bad I'm not changing the fuel, it's dripping out with no problem!

Thanks for the response!

Had the same problem with my lower rad hose. The clamp was positioned so that you had to have the hands (and wrench) of a child to get at it. Took 30 minutes to get the clamp loosened. After that, when you put the clamp back on, you will make sure it comes off easy.

Sounds like you need a service manual. Lots of sources for them and well worth the time saving and less stress.

I use my trusty flexi drive with a 10mm socket for radiator clamps. Cant beat em

The coolant drain is in the bottom corner opposite the lower rad hose.
You will have to move the skid plate to get to it.

Yeah, the clamp nut faces downward toward the skid plate, so looks like I'll need to remove the skid plate anyway. So that's where it is, I sort of figured that was the only thing left. THanks for that.

I looked for a manual, no luck. What source do you recommend?

What a PITA the instant eMail notification is still not working although I checked my profile, my spam filters, etc.,

There are a couple sources for on-line downloadable manuals here in the diesel section. It is the top sticky I think. If you want to buy a print manual you can try a JDM vehicle or parts importer or you can buy online:

Amazon.com: landcruiser: Books

Search | The Pitstop Bookshop=

eBay Australia - landcruiser manual, landcruiser manual Car Manuals, Repair, Modification Manuals, Manufacturer Manuals items at low prices

Or how about Dave at Japan4x4 here on MUD?

Well, I got an email notification of the last post, that's a good sign.

I checked that sticky awhile back for HDJ81 manuals and had no luck, perhaps I overlooked something so I'll go back and check again. I assumed that because it was for a model that never existed in North AMerica that's why there isn't anything, however I've had good luck getting all the info for the Delica.

Thanks for that info.

Might not be one specifically for your model but there should be one for the engine. Dig into the french site. I just skimmed through it quickly. You can also try ATEB in Burnaby BC. Outback had them prepping all their trucks and part of the purchase the trucks came with Factory Service Manuals. I am sure for the right price (probably over $200) they can send you a set of manuals.

Mustang Connection has manuals for just under $50.00. If it is anything like the Hayne ones that covers a lot of vehicles, it is okay for a very rough guide but will lead to significant frustration eventually. Mustang Connection - 1965 - 1973 Mustang Specialists and Foreign Car Importer

Thanks, I was just following up some of the links from your previous post. There are some on eBay Australia I was wondering about.

There's one looks like Ellery:
Toyota Landcruiser (Diesel) 1990 - 2007
70's, 80's and 100's Series Owners Service & Repair Manual
There's another that's cheap 'Gregory's'" Gregory's Toyota Landcruiser Diesel 1990-1999Rep.manual
And there's:
Toyota Landcruiser Diesel 1990-2002 from Ellery
On Amazon there's a Haynes Repair Manual but don't think they have diesel.

THe cheapest I see so far is the Ellery on Amazon for $18.21:
You can actually read pages of the book, that's pretty neat.

Also if you want to print the page, Amazon will not let you. However there is a work-around. Capture the image using 'Ctrl'-'PrintScrn'. Then open a new document in MS Word. Use 'Ctrl-V' to paste it into your document, then print the document.

How are the Ellery books?

Thanks Jason,
The ftp server currently has no free slots available for downloading. Please try again later.

I'll give it a shot later.

The manuals are the same as the paper ones I paid $325 for so they are well worth the download. If you have problems with downloading let me know and I can throw a DVD in the post for you.

Thanks Jason, I just tried again, no luck. I'll keep trying for awhile. I just heard from one of the eBay guys, it costs almost $40.00 to send a manual via seamail. I don't really mind paying, but then to wait 3 months on top of that seems like it's not worth it.

I also have an FTP server, if you've got an FTP client and you're on high speed that may work.

Is that from oz? For another $10-$15 you can send them airmail 9-10 days or express airmail ,5 days

Yeah it's from AUS. I assume that that is the best place to find a Diesel manual for the HDJ81? Anyway that FTP server just let me in for the first file so I'm downloading it now. I can possibly print it on my color laser printer for less than buying the manual, so seems like a heck of a good deal.

Thanks guys.

PM your FTP info and I will give it a go in a few days, I am on the road right now and I do not think that I have the files in the laptop.

I've purchased both the Ellery 1990-2002 70's, 80's & 100's Series with 1HZ, 1HD-T, 1HD-FT & 1HD-FTE and the Gregorys No 513 1990-1995 70, 75, 80 Series with 1HZ and 1HD-T
The Gregorys is a better manual in my opinion and is more specific than the Ellery manual.
I bought my 1HD-T FSM from ENS Industrial - Ens Industrial :: Genuine Toyota Landcruisers :: Custom Design/Build Mining Vehicles

The Gregorys/Ellery manuals are useful becuase they sometimes explain a technique that doesn't require specialized Toyota SST tools. The FSM essential for correct torque, wear, and clearance specifications.

g'luck, -Steve

I like the Gregorys too. Its a good compact manual and ideal to take with you for roadside use
