Lack of drive on hills
I have a 1HDT auto 80. When out wheeling if I go to drive off from a stand still on any incline/angle, the revs will not go over 1200RPM and there is no drive. It doesn't happen all the time but enough to piss me off. The motor, turbo are all fine, the injectors and fuel pump have been rebuilt, No mater if the gas pedal is flat to the floor the rev's don't get any higher, put it into N and the revs are back.

yes, the problem was there before the rebuild of pump, injectors and the replacement of the turbo. it is a little sluggish of the mark, but I'm getting used to it but when your out wheeling and you stop behind someone and you go to take off ......yeh

So if you rev the engine in N it's fine, in D you get this intermittent problem only on inclines?
I don't know much about the 80, but there may be a 'limp' mode that's been activated, which keeps revs below a certain rpm just to get you home when something is amiss... |

I would check out the TPS. I have seen two similar cases like this on a TD4.2 - lots of revs while parked but put it in gear and bounce it around and you get nothing over a high idle speed. In one case it had to be replaced because it was on an auto (needed for the tranny to work) and in the second case on a standard the owner just removed it. On the Bosch rotary type pump, you will find it on top. I don't have a clue on how to test these things but maybe Rosco knows.

It does seem like a limp mode. I am not to familiar with the 80 , but it could be a sensor if it happens on an incline it sounds like a fluid level. I heard that you checked all the fluids . coolent ? brake,?

What year is the 80? A440 or A442 tranny? That will determine whether or not you have a TPS. That said, no 1HDT is electronically controlled so I can't see why it wouldn't rev passed 1200rpm even if your TPS was malfunctioning. The TPS sends a signal to the tranny ECU and doesn't control engine speed. I suppose if the TPS was telling the tranny to put itself in the wrong gear it, i.e., top gear, it could cause it to bog badly.

I would eliminate the fuel lines and fuel pick up 1st.

Throttle position sensor.

I personally doubt it but stranger things have happened. I only raise the TPS issue because it was mentioned earlier by other posters as having caused issues with other vehicles- I think a Nissan Patrol was mentioned. Maybe just check it for proper adjustment and make sure it is secure and the plug contacts are ok.
I, as I stated before, would be looking first at a fuel supply issue. Check your fuel filter. When you experience this issue again, pull the fuel line to the injector pump and see if you can hand pump a good quantity of fuel using the hand primer on top of the filter. As Rosco mentioned, you may have something in your tank. Any enemies??

IT looks similar to the TPS on the Patrol:
![]() There are quite a few threads on Outerlimits4x4 of TBS faults causing similar problems in both Toyota and Nissan diesels. They all say that the TBS also controls the butterfly valve's opening and closing. I have no first hand experience with it. only repeating what i have read. I asume the quick test is to observe the butterfly valve on the intake when Busted100 has the problem. If he can't bring the revs past 1200 when sitting on the side hill and the butterfly remains closed then I would assume it is probably related to the control mechanism of the butterfly valve. But there must be another way of testing if the TBS is working properly.
