glow plug removal

I checked my glow plugs today and 5 out of 6 are ok.

The bad glow plug is the one closest to the firewall. It almost looks like the other 5 were changed but not the one that is bad.

Is there some reason that removing the 6th glow plug is more difficult than the other 5? Is there some trick that is needed for the 6th plug that the PO did not know about?

Thanks,

Not AFAIK. It's a bit difficult to get to it but do-able as long as you have decent tools available.
If all you have is just a hammer and chisel it might get difficult

Maybe when the PO did them last time it had 5 bad and 1 good

Very easy, less than 1 banana. Only "issue" was the heater hose making it a bit tight.

My local dealer received the glow plug on Thu (ordered on Mon - 14 left in CA warehouse). Swapped it out on Fri.

Now I'll have to wait for some really cold weather to see if it helps. We won't see single digit temperatures until Sunday.

In general it's a good idea to change out all the plugs at the same time. If they are not exactly the same, there may be some problems with the glow circuit working properly.

The NGK part numbers are generally easy to get and quite affordable. If you want current pricing, please PM me.

Part numbers are always useful.

Tried getting the glow plugs from NAPA but they could not match any of the part numbers I had. Ended up at the local Toyota dealer.

Thanks

Branch Toyota in Watertown.

Talk to Bill in parts, he is the only one there that knows about older LC's.

previous owner of my old bj40 said he had trouble with one of the glowplugs , he got it unthreaded, but the carbon on the element kept it stuck in the hole, and no amount of wiggling or twisting could get it out.

so he bumped the starter.

He said he heard it land on a roof a couple doors down the street, but he never did find it....

not quite the best or safest way, but makes me chuckle when I think of it...

Least he never left the hood/bonnet down

Where there's a will, there's a way.
