FJ45 build with 3B diesel

Hey all, I finally decided I should post my progress and seek more help on the overwhelming options on my project. I'll throw up a bunch of photos so you can see where I've come from and where I am.... I'll later get into the current work I would like everyones experience for.

The first pic is when I picked up all my cruiser parts... a short drive and a ferry ride back to the island where I live.
The second and third pics are the new home where I laid everything out to begin the project, I built a shed for the work.

The next set of pictures, I cleaned up the axles, used the BJ42 axles with the disc brakes. replaced all the seals, new rotors and calipers, new springs on the front and had the rears re-arched to mate the front.
Pulled the 3B out of the BJ. Put in the engine mounts on the FJ45 frame and dropped the engine in.

Then I connected the transmission and drive shafts, had the cab sandblasted and sprayed the inside and undercarriage with a good box liner. After that I mounted the cab.
In the process the weather got colder and I had to close in the shed and put a wood stove to make work enjoyable.

So basically the next pics are where I am at.. I have strung out the wiring harness, connected most of the dash, heater, gas tank re-lined and coated, clutch master cylinder and brake booster on the firewall. I kept most everything on the BJ took it straight off, cleaned or replaced and mounted on the FJ. I also installed the power steering box and pump, had to change the shock mounts so it would fit. Anyways, there you go... the next post I will express my desires for what I need to do and find out how you all might be able to direct me. By the way this is the first major project that I have ever worked on. I'm just learning as I go, most of the time I have no idea and spend way more time researching or asking someone else what they did? cheers.

So now I am in the process of finding a turbo to mount onto a 13bt manifold that I am having sent up this week. I have read about the adaptor you can buy to mount a garrett t3 flange onto. I asked BB but the shop he got his from didn't have them listed. Does anyone know where to get an adaptor for the 13bt manifold.

any other suggestions about what turbo I should use would be great.

I'm also looking for the slave cylinder for the clutch, mine is pretty siezed. The ones I have found locally have a wider mount than what fits on my engine.
The 3B came out of an 82 BJ42 and I'm in Canada.

I'll start with those two things... any help would be appreciated.

I learned the same way you are, by piecing together an old fj one bolt at a time.

The bj clutch slave is shorter than the h or f piece.

They do not interchange.

I picked up a new clutch slave from the local Toyota dealer here in FL.

They ordered it for me, and it took only a few days to receive.

The slave is rebuild able and Toyota offers a kit for the job.

I decided just to replace mine since it was really rusty.

A Garrett Ta 310 is a great turbo.

It is from a 85 Mercedes 300td and has a 9psi waste gate.

It is an upgrade from the 301 from the 81-84 300d.

The 301 waste gate is set a 7psi

The 310 has a 2.5 exhaust outlet vs the 301s 2.25 exhaust outlet.

Both Mercedes turbos are oil cooled.



Some Volvos have Garrett t3s.

A few guys here are running them.

The Volvo turbos are water cooled and oil cooled.

I built my turbo system around a turbo a friend had laying around.

The ct-26 turbo from any Toyota (other than a supra) would also be a good choice.

You won't need an adapter.

Well I fired up my truck for the first time since I started the project over a year ago. I actually started to drive it, but had to hold off as I'm not quite ready. Anyways here are some more photos of what I've been keeping my neighbors up late for... I'll bet they can't wait for me to be done. Pictures are.. my discs onto the rear full floater, my rad sandwiched between the electric fan and intercooler for my turbo... and last pic is the roll bar and rock sliders I've been working on.

Why the electric fan?Most of us use the standard belt driven fan,it seems to pull more air through

Diesel42 has just given me the measurements for the adapter he made to fit a GT2052 on his 13BT manifold. I can use those same measurements to give you a T3 adapter but it will be a few days before I get it done.

Not sure the details of the flatbed other than it being wood on the frame work... I kinda make it up as I go.
As for the fan.. because I added the power steering the belt was in the way of the fan blade so I would need to space the fan out... and being that I have the intercooler in front I had to pull the rad back. It wasn't lining up. And on top of that the electric fan pulls 4500 cfm.... a powerful fan... plus with it running on a thermostat the fan will continue running even if the engine is stopped which will help the cooling. I have a second alternator to charge a third battery specifically for the fan and other accessories totally separate from the main system. It's all kinda an experiment. Cheers

Hey guys... I had the engine fired up. I can't believe how smoothly it fired up right away after sitting for almost 2 years...
I had it running then it began to sputter out.. I found a small leak in the return line which I fixed and seemed to help.
But shortly after it began to run rough and die. I don't have much for an exhaust on it as I will be changing it all out for the turbo and change everything anyways.
Do you think it may be clogged injectors or and issue with the exhaust. It did seem like it was getting the fuel to run then just started to sputter...
Any help?

Looking good.

That sounds to me like you might have a problem with fuel tank venting. Does it run with the fuel cap off? How about if you just attach the inlet fuel line to a plain old gas can, does that make a difference? How about the fuel filter? Has it been replaced, or has it been idle for the two years?

If it ran and then started to die and sputter , that means that there is air in the fuel system. Get yourself (if you dont already) some fuel conditioner fire it up and slightly crack each injector the farthest one from the Injector pump first and then close it till it really spurts (at idle speed) Be carefull not to spray your eyes or any thing else . If it idles but runs rough and sputters with blue smoke (misses) it is your fuel filter clogged. Awesome Project are you coming to Cruiser Days July 19 on the Mainland ?

I've got adapter designs to fit the CT26 manifold to a T25, T3 or GT2052 turbo.
I haven't yet finished all the drawings though, give me a few more days.

hey thanks guys, I'll try and figure it out in the next few days... been fabin up the supports on the roll bar, I'm going to rap some kind a steel gratting and protection around the back of cab. Also looking at the trailer hitch... how far out it should stick.
