3B timing cover has Daihatsu emblem

Howdy mates:

Doing some gasket repair / replace on my 3B - timing cover and i.p. " O" ring seal - scraping all the crud off timing cover - and heavy cleaning - I see a Daihatsu insignia on the timing cover -

Anyone know if this Toyota /Hino engine is shared with Daihatsu and what was it used in ?

Aware of Toyota shared cooperation of Daihatsu in '67 and buying controlling stock in '99:

Cheers in advance:

Toyota Dyna and Daihatsu Delta trucks shared the same body and engines since the late 60s. The Delta was also available as a heavy duty van and bus and possibly the Dyna as well.(we only got the Delta van in Oz)

Toyota and Hino make all the Daihatsu engines.
The B engines are also found in the Toyota Coaster/Optima buses

The Toyota Blizzard with the 2L engine was also sold as Daihatsu 4Trak, Rugger.

I have a Diahatsu symbol on my B diesel too.

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere years ago that these Diahatsu-symboled engines were manufactured in a Diahatsu factory but to the same drawings/specifications as those produced in the Toyota factory.

But then this conflicts with what Rosco has just said. (All made by Toyota.)

I was always sort of proud mine was Diahatsu too. Because the writer had boasted about the supurb quality of the Diahatsu-made diesels.

Maybe my memory playing tricks again or the original source was incorrect? ----Damn

PS. I think I read this in a newspaper review on new landcruisers when I was living in Perth (Western Australia) in 1981

Only the B engines are suppose to have the Daihatsu symbol on the timing cover. You may have a B engine not a 3B in there. If I remember right the timing covers of the B engine are similar to the 3B but will not interchange.

I've got 2 3b's. One in my cruiser and one in the shed. Both have the Diahatsu symbol.

Must be an export thing. All the 2B's and 3B's I have seen here in Japan have the toyota kanji symbol on them. Only ones I have seen with daihatsu symbol were the B engines in a 79' or older 40s.

Yes. I had thought it was peculiar to the B engine too.

The daihatsu deltas changed to the 2B and 3B when toyota did. They are now using the 1KD-FTV common rail Turbo Diesel engine ,the same as the Dyna and Prado.

Daihatsu didnt call them B engines. I think they went V10,V11 and V12.

I just looked at the Diahatsu diesel home site and they still make diesel engines, but only large stationary and marine diesel of 500kw and 20 litres or so.

Howdy mates:

I should mention my timing cover - and will check my other 3B - have both the Toyota and Daihatsu emblems on timing cover - I spoke with Daihatsu's main parts guy in California - he knows of the truck used in - Closest it came here was Central America

was a long shot to see if I could find some faster parts service as the dealer I usually deal with , cant seems to get parts - Mail From Canada is very slow these days - Do you have a good parts supplier there in the Oceania?

Cheers

We do have good parts suppliers, but getting one who will deal with overseas orders is not easy.
Roodogs4wdspares on aussie ebay is the best all round IMO.
The cost of sending heavy or bulky parts has always been the limiting factor.
