Ok, spell it out for me: 84 FJ60 - to - 84 BJ60?
So, I bought a rusted out 84 BJ60 and I just bought a rusted free 84 FJ60 from a cool guy named Justin spends time on Ih8mud.
I have read through a few of the FJ to BJ conversions on here. What I think would really help me is a simple list of things to do. The BJ60 is currently legally registered here in Oregon. I want to be sure that when the project is done I can remain legally registered with the BJ's VIN number. Maybe I'm making more out of this project in my head. I know what I am thinking about here is more than a simple engine swap. Can anyone spell it out for me with a simple list of what's needed to get from point "A" to point "BJ60". Thanks, -Craig I'm new but am finding I'm already addicted to the site. |

Well the Bj60 is the vehicle you want to be registered.... So in essence you are swapping the body to get rust free,
Is the frame on the BJ60 any good? Or do you want to use the Fj60 frame? Legally if you only move the engine to the Fj60 you have a diesel FJ60. If you move the body to the frame and engine of the BJ60 you have a Bj60.... So what is your goal? Are you going to sell the rusty gas converted BJ60 afterwards....? __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |

The BJ60 frame is seriously rusted out.
I had not thought about building up what was left of each vechical. So I need to keep the BJ60 frame to reamin a BJ? |

Honestly I would amalgamate the two together in whatever fashion and rivet the BJ60 vin to the drivableI would remains.
So to answer your questions.... Pull the front end of the BJ and FJ. Yank the drive trains. Cut the BJ engine mounts off the frame, measure precisely where they were. Weld them to the FJ frame. Insert BJ engine. The BJ wiring harness should be used for simplicity. I would also use the KM gauge cluster

Is there a VIN on the frame somewhere?
I did see the one riveted to the back of the engine compartment (or firewall). Thanks for replying. |

yes, rh side of the frame behind the rh front wheel. On the frame. Nothing that cannot be filled in with something and the BJ one stamped on to complete the conversion....

Put the diesel engine into the FJ60, next time registration is due, simply cross out gasoline and write in Diesel. Legal, legitimate. IT is now a diesel, 1984 Toyota Landcruiser. At least that is what I did with my diesel 84, 60 swap of a few years ago.
Engine swap: go through the BJ engine (BEFORE) starting the rush of the transplant. Source all your parts. Take a look at transmissions (I'm guessing a BJ may not have the H-42, or if you go H-55, with an 84 you need to do drive line lengths). Cut out and re-use, or make new engine mounts (if needed). Figure out the electrical (that is what put me over the edge on my HZ transplant). Fuel Lines may need to switch sides, as well as exhaust - don't know on the BJ. I'd suggest all new hoses too. Have shop space, have friends, take your time and do it proper. A BJ may go into a 60 a whole lot easier than an HZ. I had a whole lot of problems with my transplant, while another Bendite slammed a 2h into his 60 in a weekend and ran home-bio with no problems at all. Me ...... well, Blown head Bad pump Overheating problems Blown turbo Under sized turbo new radiator some wiring help disintegrating fuel lines (thank to bioD) A second engine A year with my work truck out of service A whole ton of vaporized cash New H55, etc., etc. Would I do it again? Hell yes - the dead engine and the 45 are getting closer and closer to being mated and renewed. Bob |

I may be missing something here, but i don't understand your desire to do the juggling engines/frames/bodies/VINs back and forth. As was posted earlier, why not just transplant the engine and required components from the BJ to the FJ?
It is illegal here and likely everywhere else to swap the VIn tag. I don't get the reason behind this. Good luck with your project. -kevin __________________ If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is probably not for you... |

Kevin,
You aren't missing anything. I have never done a swap and knew others on here had and was looking for what I need to do. -Craig |
