I have a 3b engine in a 77 fj40 and was wondering what cannot get wet in an engine while doing water crossings?

I have had my 3B and my 12H-T totally submerged. They both still ran.

so there is no problem with the alternator or anything else electrical in the front, will water not short the battery out?

Actually, On my 12H-T the "charge" light did come on briefly. I believe it was due to the belt slipping. On my 3B I disconnected my batteries first.....

Interesting. I wonder what the proper procedure (well the best anyways) is?

Doesn't disconnecting the battery while its running burn out the regulator on the overly expensive alternator??

dont disconnect the battery, it should be fine in water, but if you are going deeper than headlights and baffling the radiator isn't enough, you should just remove the fan belt. It stops the fan pulling into the radiator. The field in the alternator should be allright, even covered in water. Other than that, those engines will run fully submerged.

A good diesel engine will run through some very harsh conditions.
We had an air-cooled I-6 diesel at school that ran in 110°F ambient air for hours at a time,
no load, from idle to governor and back, frequent stops and restarts and no oil changes.
Never skipped a beat. Hardly any smoke at startup, except 1st thing in the a.m.
Only real caveats for submerging a diesel are watch your EGTs prior to dunking. The rapid
drop in temperature could warp or even crack the manifold. I hose down alternators while
running at work all the time, with no ill effects. As long as they have sealed bearings and no
pre-existing damage, water will not harm them. The belt will slip and squeal and glaze
slightly. Carry a small brass brush and at the end of the day, run it along the contact surface
of your belts and it'll de-glaze them without harming them. Make sure it's a fine bristle,
though.
If you have a leak-free fuel system, no worries. If you have a leak in the pressure side,
you'll just contaminate the water a bit. If you have a leak in the suction side, you're going
to risk injector nozzle damage. So make sure your fuel lines are good.
That's about it.

The main reason for running a snorkel is to stop the thing ingesting water.

The compression in most diesels being relatively high, they will be quite happy trying to compress water. When the water won't compress, things start bending and breaking, like con rods for example.

Getting water in a diesel is great way to ensure you WILL be rebuilding your motor!

A snorkel is a pretty cheap insurance policy.

I thought, forgive me if I am wrong......

You idle for a bit on low idle, and let everything cool off, which it will do at idle.

Then keep a pressure wave going in front of you as best you can...

I've had my rig in some pretty deep water, lapping around the bottom of the front windscreen. (you just have to make sure the windows are wound up or you'll get wet ) The alternator usually stops charging for a moment, but comes right after it dries out

What can't get wet - the intake. I've had everything else stuck under water - no problems. There was another thread: wet intake = BIG$$$$. You can get around a snorkle 90% of the time by waterproofing the intake and tucking it up high toward the firewall. In No. America - short of ANY TRIP WITH WHATLEY or WAYNE, you really don't need a snorkle. Any trip with them = mandatory

Whoops. Guess that was me. I must have stumbled across this while looking for something else and replied without taking any notice of the date.

Another lesson learned by the noob
