High Beam Weirdness

Just picked up a nice, virtually rust free HJ60 on the weekend, bought it from a friend who has owned it since 1986, she got it when she turned 19.

However on the way to work this morning the high beams would cut out as soon as I turned them on, they work fine if I pulled on the switch as if I wanted to flash someone.

Are we looking at a relay problem or is the switch gone south in my steering column.

Thanks

Just drove home at lunch and the Highbeams worked great, I can hear the relays clicking, I'm going to chalk it up a stuck relay due to sitting out side for 4 days at -20c. I'll dig around for the relay and find the part number and see if I can get a new one.

Keep an eye on it.. I might still peg it as a steering column problem. Mine was intermittent over 3 months or so.. sometimes it would need several 'tries' to get the high beams to stay on and then it would be fine for a few more weeks.. Finally the high beam switch gave out completely at 3am on an icy mountain curve. I'm sure I was only immersed in complete darkness for half a second before I toggled back to low beams but it sure felt like a lot longer!

I'd say the contacts on the switch need some cleaning.

Thanks for the link, I wouldn't be surprised if its the contacts. I had to do the whole horn ring clean on my BJ60 so i know how corroded things get. I'll take things apart on the weekend and check the switch.

had the same prob with my 84 hj60 id be driving along at night on high beam and sudden darkness. had to quickly select low beam eventually i just left it on low
eventually tracked down the prob. It was in the stearing colum switches, i cleaned the contacts and bent things a tad to add a little more tension, its worked a treat ever since [about 2 yrs]
