Winter starting problems

Greetings fella's. The weather is very cold her is Saskatchewan and My HZJ73 was parked for one one day without starting, but was plugged in and won't start. The truck will attempt to start but will not quite make it. -30 out that day. Any suggestions to get it started and to prevent this in the future? Appreciate the help.

Make sure you have winter diesel in it. Do you have a block heater, rad hose heater or oil pan heater. Or a combo of the above.

If it is turning over but not firing it sounds like a it may not be getting fuel. Have you changed the fuel filter later?

You can get anti gel additive for the cold weather.

It's cold here to, but my 61 always starts when plugged in. It only has an oil pan heater but I would like to install a lower rad hose heater as well.

I also installed those 80W battery blankets yesterday. It will be interesting to see if they help with the starting power.

Thanks, I have a block heater and that's why I was surprised it didn't start, I will try a couple of your suggestions.

Block heater could be burnt out. Mine stopped working within 3 weeks of me installing it last year, so I put an inline heater in there.

Skyrider, I've had mine plugged and over a couple of times and for different reasons the power was not reaching. Thus, now I feel the engine top or the base of the plug to check if it actually did really heat up!

yes double check your block heater is actually working.

What does it do when trying to start? lots of smoke? Or won't turn over quickly enough to catch?

check your block heater--maybe use a magnetic one to get the truck warm to start. Also may want to check the glow plugs and make sure they are working. And finally make sure the place you are getting diesel fuel from has winter diesel--or use #1 diesel. If you are unable to start the truck with just a block heater than you may need to move it into a warm garage because it is likely that your fuel has clouded up and will no longer flow.

Well after some investigation, I found two problems, extension cord running to the block heater was chewed by my dogs, then burried under snow, and the place I buy deisel from has a doesn't have creditability with other deisel owners, possible a little water in it. Appreciate all the help.

I'm sure we don't need to mention it.... but how long are you letting it glow for?

Perhaps it needs more glow time?
