prado sx5

Hi All, I just purchased a 1990 landcruiser prado sx5. It smokes quite a bit when Its cold and i think the culprit is my turbocharger. Does this make sense and does anyone know where i can pick up a manual fo this model cruiser?

There is dozens of things that can make them smoke. The colour of the smoke ,when it occurs and how long for,are the clues.

The turbo charger would be last on my list of most likelys.

If your in a cold climate ,the glow plugs are the 1st things to check.

We have links to online manuals at the top of the 70 series forum and the diesel forum.

I would not think it's the turbocharger. As if the turbo had some sort of oil leak it would do it all the time. And at idle the turbo isn't doing anything at all anyhow.

If you blew balck smoke underload and had low boost pressure I would think the turbo has something wrong.

Some whitesmoke on start up is normal. Most diesels in cold weather will smoke in the cold. ineffective glowplugs make it worse.

It would be easier to diagnose if you would describe the "color" of smoke as in blue , black, white or grey. Anyways if it is black I wouldnt really worry about it , mine would smoke pretty good (black)when cold. When climbing hills it is better to keep the revs up and back off the throttle, I know mine ran a little cooler that way, coolent and exhaust gas temp.
