Yet another newbie with questions
Sages of Collective Wisdom:
I have recently purchases a BJ60 (Fafnir) and have questions, and so I turn to mud. Drove to work in snowstorm this morning, felt way more comfortable than the Jetta. I like this truck Although not diesel specific (except the battery question), thought this would be a good place to start.
Afraid I only have one picture at work, but here you go: http://picasaweb.google.com/ravenscr...89107435278994 __________________ Ubique Regan 1984 BJ60 'Fafnir' 2003 Jetta TDi 'Sigurd' Raven's Croft Forge 45°10'25"N 76°18'31"W RR#2 Clayton, ON, Canada "Just another all diesel, bald, bearded, bagpiping, blacksmith" |

You can't just boost one battery AFAIK. I have contemplated this as well. If you can't get two vehicles with two sets of jumpers then you will have to do it the slow way. You will need to charge one battery from the boost vehicle and then charge the other. I am guessing on a near dead battery that about 10 minutes on each will give enough for a glow and a crank. What ever you do, DO NOT DO THE 12v THING OF GROUNDING ON THE ENGINE AND HOT CLAMP TO THE HOT BATTERY POST. You have to put the ground wire on the negative post of the battery.

Great...thanks. Now I have a Jetta (03 TDi) I can't boost from or to, a Jetta I can (92 EcoDiesel) and truck that needs both. I think I'm hitting Canadian Tire for one of those boost machines...

hi,
someone correct me if i'm wrong so here goes! is this bj60 a 12v if yes you can charge the two batteries at the same time. try charging one and you'll see the other charges at the same time. you can get a boost from any 12v source. if it's a 24v system, then that's a different story. what year is this bj60? the rear seatbelt design is troublesome at best. i have a family and i know the headaches i've been through, others will agree. have a long flat screwdriver at hand and help the belt retract to it's full retract position and pull on it slow and steady to full extension. the trick is to let the belt retract in a hurry all in one shot to full retract position. trial and error and the screwdriver method will help you. i've tried lubricating the assembly but didn't help much. there's a recall on the rear seatbelt assembly but the remedy is not much better. go see your local toyota dealer for more info on the issue. i find using a wiper assist ($10-12) at your crappy tire store is helpful but the wiper won't stay in the up position on it's own(make it hard to do a good windshield cleaning)! nice looking cruiser, the mirrors are off a 1986-87 hj60. hth,

It's an 84 BJ60, so 12 volt. Probably best to plug in the battery warmers already. Got cold and snowy really quickly here in the Ottawa Valley. I'm trying to figure out if I can do the shoulder belt thing (would make my wife much happier). There's parts from SOR, but someone recently posted using Volvo belts (which makes me sad because in order to the FJ40 I had to give up my 240's...should of stripped them before the wrecker came), and an aftermarket seat belt manufacturer which I might look at it. I guess I will need to figure out the seat belt screw driver timing.

ok cool well since its just the 12V model (there were no 24V BJ60s were their?) just jump the truck like you would a normal car! if the bats are totally flat it may take a min or too to get some latent charge in the system... if you are pushed for time you can disconnect the pos bat terminal then just attach the jump cables to the terminal directly (thus bypassing the flat bats) start it, then reattach the terminals.
But if thats too much work just hook the truck up positive to positive and negative to negative try it, if she wont go wait 5-10 min and try again! (PS iv only ever had to wait once, when I had left the lights on for a week and 1/2) __________________ ___________________________________________ 83 BJ60 SOLD 89 BJ74 24V RHD |

on a 12 volt BJ60 you boost directly to the main battery on the LH side of the vehicle. The one where the starter wire attaches too.
No need to be fancy. Just hook the wires from the boost one to the posistive post and the other to the engine block, or if you have to the negative of the battery. The battery on the RH side of the truck(passenger side, LHD) is hooked up via normal cables in the truck. SO just forget it's even there. __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |
