400 miles, new BJ42, what to bring?

My BJ42 is just off the boat and I'm picking it up this Friday. I've got about 400 miles to go between the port and my home, what do you all think I should bring with, or check before I set out? I'm new to diesels...

Fluids, naturally, but which? Oil, water, transmission? Tcase? Diffs?

What about this "sedimenter" thing I keep hearing about?

Any tools for roadside repair I might not think to bring?

Youll most likely need batteries and jumper leads
A good set of metric spanners and sockets
Grease gun for the uni joints and driveshafts
Check if its gonna need a spare tyre.
Wheel brace ,jack
And all that stuff you suggested

IMO ,rather than try to guess every situation, just take a car trailer. If its driveable ok ,if not tow it.
My main concern would be that a long highway trip will stir up the sediment and block the cores or the thermo is non operative.

I believe you bought from NZ maybe seller chrisman?? If so he usually ships good to go cruiser,ie oil ,antifreeze etc good and other fluids at least checked?I would bring metric tools, diesel grade oil [2 qts ], diesel fuel conditioner, and I would simply check underneath for any obvious leaks or problems.Run her for a while 10 -20 miles and pull over and check for leaks /probs etc and keep going. You will find that 100 km /hr is about max[unturbo'd].Good luck.

Sedimenter is on pass side attached to frame ,looks like a small coffee can with 2 fuel lines on top .If it is hooked up and not leaking leave it alone .There is a drain plug on the bottom for letting any water / sludge out. The light on your dash should lite up if there is water /sludge in the sedimenter,or if you want you can just take the plug out for a visual drain and inspect. It will prob be clogged up and you will have to probe the hole with a small tool to get it to flow for a few secs and then recap it. There are posts and pics ref sedimenter on here.

I'm bringing all the manuals I downloaded, good call there.

The consignment company who un-containered it advises me that the battery is good to go, however this brings up an interesting question: its 24V, single battery. Is there any way to jump this thing in a pinch, or do you just have to make sure your battery is good before leaving the house?

I take it you're not joking about the earplugs? is it really that loud? ... i haven't been in an FJ OR a BJ, so I admit I know nothing.

It is not that bad, but you will be happy if you have a set around when you'd want to use them.

depends on the truck, if it's tight with no rattles and good exhaust/ muffler, then it's not so bad.

but they often have a rattle or two that'll drive you batshit after 400 miles, and earplugs are often nice to have around.

You mentioned it is straight off the boat, so that means it is not registerd in your Counrty, or have third party insurance etc. Or can you get a permit to drive it for 1 day?

yeah, thats a problem solution TBD.

I'll either throw myself on the good grace of the highway patrol (since ill be carrying the bill of sale and all paperwork, theres usually some leniency), or try to get the moving permit...

or i cold stop at the DMV right there in LA
