Help, won't start!!
The Truck - 90 Turbo Diesel (1HDT i believe) SUV style (I'm terrible with numbers, 81 series?)
The Story - OK before everyone else sais it, I am the biggest retard ever and deserve to be shot.... So after the (what I thought was) the worst day ever I decided to go blow off some steam and have some fun on a dirt pile at the end of my street. 5 minutes later my shiney LC is lying on it's side. Once I get my wits about me I throw it in Neutral and shut it off (about 30 s). It spits and sputters for about 20 seconds after I turn off the key befor it finaly dies. So out come the tow ropes and 1 hour later it's back right way up. The Problem - When I try to start it, the starter engages like normal for 1/2 a second and then hits a brick wall. Won't roll over at all. Batteries have plenty of charge, but it won't turn at all. I had been driving on the street for about 20 mins and off road for 5, not going hard at all, so there is no way it was over heated. HELP PLEASE!! Anyone have any idea's?? Thanks from Your DUMBASS of the day James |

I suspect that oil may have entered one or more of your engine's cylinders when your vehicle was lying on its side. This is common with rollovers that aren't "righted" immediately. (Yours was left on its side for 1 hour you say.)
So when you turned it over via the starter motor, the engine was probably trying to compress oil in its combustion chambers. (And unlike air, oil CANNOT be compressed.) Let's hope you didn't do damage (like bend a "connecting rod") by turning it over. You could try leaving it overnight (for any oil to drain down past the rings and back into the sump), then gently try turning the engine over by hand (there are various methods) to ensure no oil remains there before trying the starter again.

PS.
I'm not familiar with your diesel. But if you're not prepared to wait for the oil to drain naturally (and there's even a possibility it WON'T drain naturally), ----remove all your glow plugs, place a towel over the motor, and then turn it over via the starter. I have seen this done without the towel and the entire underside of the bonnet (hood in your language probably) got covered in oil! Crikey! Days don't really get much worse than THAT one! You will have learnt a lot from it though. One of the big lessons is --- NEVER use the the starter immediately after a rollover if the vehicle has been left lying on its side for more than a few minutes. WOW thanks for that info, I "bumped" it again and had no luck, I will remove the glo plugs and give it another go.... Man I hope I didn't bend anything, but from what I hear the 1hdt is a very strong motor.... We'll hope this holds true, or else I have a rebuild in my future....

Yep that was it... Had to pull the plugs. After doing that it fired right up and ran like a dream, at least after a minute of heavy smoke (burning off the oil!!). Good testament for the 1HD-T after trying to start it a few times (more than I should have, but after my first roll over it took some time to un scramble my brain) with the cylinders full of oil, it didn't do any obvious damage, no grinding rattling or popping..... Man I love Toyota.
THANKS FOR THE HELP James |
