HELP! Alternator/vac pump problems

On the back of my 77 BJ's alternator there is a vacuum pump. it's got a hose attached by a banjo nut that goes into a... cylinder of some kind that seems to be broken. I don't know what it's called, or even what it does, so finding a replacement has been a challenge.

I'll post pic's tonight when I get home.

Thanks!

Your vacuum pump provides vacuum for your power brakes and vacuum assisted clutch. The canister holds a reserve of vacuum. If the vacuum brake line or cannister is leaking, you will want that fixed right away.

You could use one off any diesel. The manual calls it a vaccum reservoir. Some have wiring for sensors that alert you to low vaccum and possible brake problem.
The diesel engines doesn't make enough vaccum in the manifold for your brakes.

Hi, is it possible for you to post a photo, its just that the banjo fitting on the altenator vac pump tend to go back to the engine block as these are the oil lines. The hose that goes to your vac tank tends to be a pressure fitting clamp or a screw clamp. You should have 3 hoses coming from your altenator vac pump. One is a banjo fitting to the engine for oil, the other would mostly be a clamp type fitting for oil return to engine ( sometimes these can be banjo as well), and the last will be a clamp type to your vac tank from where another hose goes to your brake booster.Unless the US is different I have never seen a banjo fitting hose on the altenator vac pump going to the vac tank, this is not a pressure side but rather the vac side, are you sure you traced the hose correctly?

Click to make bigger, sorry image shack blows, but it's the only one I could think of off the top of my head. Also, the one you see detached here is the one that goes down to the oil filter mount, from there it seems to go back to the Vacuum Reservoir (big can under car by the driver seat) then from there up to the brake booster.
I know all of this seems out of place, and I know it doesn't look so great, but it came from Panama... it's in o.k. shape, but needs alot of work.

thanks again everyone.

ok, thats the real early one, as its vacumm to the tank all you need to do is use a clamp over the rubber hose from the vac tank and push it on the end of that fitting and screw it tight.

On mine I have only one banjo fitting and its oil from the block the other one is oil return and has a screw clamp and the hose that goes from the altenator back to the vac tank just has one clamp that expands with the use of a pair of plyers as it is on the vacumm side.

PS. if your tank is leaking get on off a 60 series or another diesel.
