1hdt power steering rebuild or new

I have a 91 hdj81 with a 1hdt diesel engine and the power steering pump is starting to leak and I am trying to decide whether to rebuild or buy new, I am located in western Canada.

Has anybody rebuilt these pumps and if so is it relatively easy/worth it, or should I buy new. If doing a rebuild is a pump kit all I need or do you recommend some other parts and where is the best place to get one? Or if new where is the best place to buy this?

Mine was leaking - turbed out to be the o ring on the lower pipe going into the pump - there is also a banjo fitting that can leak. Did you see where the oil is coming from?

Also, the oil pumps pretty much last forever on these trucks (ok some may need rebuilding), but you can always just replace all the seals in it and keep going.

I havnt looked real close yet, the hoses appear to be fine and it is not leaking profusely but the pump gets wet and dirty after a while, so I thought I would be premeptive. On another note the engine of the power steering side has been getting a little wet and I am pretty sure that it is from the power steering fluid reservoir, even though when the engine is running and reving I cannot see where it is coming from, but after driving it for a while I find a little bit a fluid sitting on the lip of the reservoir, so I am unsure if it is the cap or reservoir itself? Has anyone had a problem with caps before?

There is a Toyota Part rebuild kit for PS pumps .. some o rings .. if no other problem than leak, rebuild it.

My reservoir always has oozed a little fluid.I tried swapping caps but it didnt make a difference.
It depends on how far you want to go with a rebuild. The O ring can wear a groove on the shaft and mine was able to be machined out without losing too much metal.
A new shaft would have been $150 or so.
Mine was done about 2 1/2 years ago and has worked flawlessly since. I think it cost me under $200 as opposed to $475 AUD for new one.
The vanes sometimes need replacing too.

Mine was rebuilt with the help of Rob at Raddcruisers. Really is simple to do. He has a mini writeup.

The only relatively hard parts are pulling the pump gear off, and getting at the oil seal inside the front half of the pump. Other than that its simply remove the old O-rings and replace with new. One thing to be wary of is the vanes, make sure you keep them together.Pull the pump from the passenger side wheel well, comes out with 3 bolts.

O-ring kit can be had from ens industrial in Sask. Around $40.

Pm me if you need some pics of the pump.
