How longs a piece of string?

IMO ,a 1HD T probably wont take the hiding a 12HT will. The BEB change was not a guaranteed fix for the
1HD T. There are owners who claim to have replaced the BEB twice and sometimes 3 times.
All things being perfect they may get 500000klms.

However because most people change cars every 5-6 years ,there is no guarantee that all owners will give it the service and good driving habits they deserve.

Most of the older aussie 1HD T are hitting 400000klms.
Maybe they are good for 500000klms but Ive heard of a few being rebuilt at under 300000klms.

A former employer had one back in the mid 90s and through all the hard driving ,it was using oil and coolant at 220000klms.

Another aspect is that these are Australias king of the tow vehicles, anyone who has horses will more than likely own a turbo landcruiser .Towing around a couple of ton must do something to lower longevity to some extent regardless of careful driving.

When Aussie wreckers get a 1HD T,they more than likely rebuild it rather than offering a guarantee on a used engine with high klms .
Maybe it would last another 100k but they dont seem to want to risk it

The 1HZ because of its lower HP seem to last 400000klm easy, but many used in the mining game get much less.
Some ex miners are so well tarted up it can take a good eye to pick up the clues but they often die at under 300000.

These are just my observations from looking at vehicles at auctions/salesyards and talking to the many landcruiser owners and mechanics I speak too.

There is no doubt in my mind that hard acceleration is what kills both these engines

Most mining companies here in canada (the ones I deal with) say that the 1HZ is a 10000 hour engine - and I have driven 8000 hour 1HZ's that perform and run great. The rule of thumb I have heard is that every 1000 hours is like 50,000 kms - so a 10000 hour engine would be about 500,000 kms. But keep in mind that these trucks are abused and run high rpms all day long.

I've seen some 1HD-T here with 350 factory km .. on it and running nice .. with good maintenance I thought could long last 400,000 km

The original one in my 80 lasted 258000kms but the bearings hadn't been done and that's what caused the failure. That said, the cylinder bores were in fine shape. The head needed a valve grind and guides replaced.

From what Ive seen, that is fairly typical, the bore and pistons are the last to go.

So, is it safe to say that the 12H-T was the last "best" diesel engine?

It carried less weight than an 80 series. But its lower output ,sturdy construction and inline pump make it hard to beat.

It seems almost an inescapable fact that the more HP you pull out of a set CC of an engine ,the lower the lifespan

Another example is Nissan's hi tech 3.0 TD that pulls around an 80 series sized Patrol.
It does it partly from its variable vane turbo ,which is great until it locks on full open.
The last thing a lot of owners remembered before the engine exploded ,was enjoying much more HP than normal

Yep, the Trollers even have there own 3.0 Grenade Club. There are a number of problems with the 3.0TD including week pistons and a MAF which has the habit of getting contaminated with oil blow-by which leads to the bomb. I have also been hearing rumours that the diesel in the newer 100 series are having problems as well.
