Matt,
Can you give a quick step by step how to for guys like me who clearly just lost all mental cohesion and can't seem to figure out how to download the EPC via the bit torrent system that you have setup. Please include links etc. As a start I have already loaded Filezilla and am ready to rock now. Thanks and cheers

No problem.

That Filezilla programme will only do ftp transfers, so firstly, you'll need a different client programme. There is an extensive list of the more widely known clients here:

BitTorrent client - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and this section:

BitTorrent (protocol) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

gives you a basic idea of what it does.

Personally, I use UTorrent on M$. Seems the most configurable with the least phaff that I've found upto just.

Torrent - The Lightweight and Efficient BitTorrent Client

In a nutshell, download and install that programme, (or fire up your existing torrent client if you have one installed), then click upon that little green torrent icon on the downloads site. You will then be prompted to open or save the torrent file. (A small file which just contains the info required to download the actual main file itself). If your torrent client has been set as the default to open .torrent files, click on open and your torrent client will take over from there, (prompting for any options it may require), or click save and it will ask for a location to which to save the .torrent file. Save the file to wherever you normally would for something you download. Then, open your torrent client and tell it you wish to add a new torrent. Point it to the location of the .torrent file you just downloaded and then it will, (again, if required), prompt you for any options it may require before adding the torrent.

After adding the torrent, just leave the client to do its work. You may find that it takes several minutes to find any available seeders. That's nothing unusual, so no need to worry if it does.

What will happen using this system over the ftp method is that your torrent client will connect both to the seeder running on the server and to anyone elses machine which is in the process of downloading or seeding that same file as you are downloading. What then happens is that you literally share the file between yourselves, as well as getting missing parts of the file from the server. The server seeder is there to make sure that a seed for each file is always available. The more people who are downloading or seeding that particular file, however, the faster your download should become, as you will be getting parts of the file from several different machines.

At a push, if you can't get to grips with the torrent system, a couple of ftp connections have been left in place as a secondary download system, so the ftp option is still available, (when it has a free slot). You should find that the torrent system performs better, however, especially if there are other seeders/downloaders for that file.
That's why I've put this system in place in preference of the ftp system. I used to get no end of grief about the ftp server being busy and having no available download slots, but with this system, it isn't as dependant upon the server itself for the data transfer, so the availability should, theoretically, be better, especially as more people leave their machines seeding the file(s).
The server is still completely in control of tracking and the initial seeding, (just to allay anyones concerns), but the distribution system should improve the file availability notably eventually, (one hopes).

Once a download is completed via the torrent system, btw, it would be greatly appreciated if you could seed the file(s) you've downloaded for a while from your machine. That way, it will give anyone else downloading the same files the benefit too.

Thanks for the compliments, I did put quite a lot of effort into trying to get it right and it has obviously paid off

Someone was asking about suggested scanning resolution - all my manuals were scanned at 300dpi on a cheap and chearful Epson RX600 one page at a time in various busts of activity over a couple of years I have a Photoshop filter sequence recorded as an 'action' I use to clean up each scan to remove what's showing through from the other side of the page. Then they go through ABBYY Fine Reader for OCR and becoming PDF's.

Jon.

I leave my machine running BitTorrent as often as I can remember to help with the seeding. How hard was this to set up on your server? I have a dedicated server running Fedora 5 with spare space and bandwidth that I could seed from your site if it isn't too time consuming to set up.

That would be absolutely spanking if you could put some space/bandwidth to one side for it. All in all at the moment, I think there's around 12G of files up there, (excluding the old EPC's, which aren't on the torrent setup).

In truth, the client prog that is doing the seeding is simplicity itself. Took me ages to find it, but it's a gem.

BTPD - The BitTorrent Protocol Daemon

Most of the aggro I had with this torrent system was due to having to adapt and rewrite the tracker/scr@pe scripts to fit in with the downloads server. That client prog is about as simple as it gets, however. No external dependencies or suchlike. A quick config, make and install and it's sorted. Best part is that it only requires a single instance to be run to do all the transfers/seeding. It doesn't need a separate instance for each torrent. It has a nice little commandline interface too, and only needs a simple one liner to add a new torrent, and then it reloads them all automatically on each restart, so there's no phaffing about once they've been initially added.
The only caveat, (if it can be called such), I've found so far is that it does ever so occasionally exit for no discernible reason, but I just run a shell script from cron every quarter hour to take care of restarting it if needs be, so that's no biggie. I seem to remember it's only happened twice this month, so it is a rarity rather than the rule.

If you want to give it a whirl, PM me your e-mail address and I'll e-mail all of the torrent files and the shell scripts, (one for startup and the cron monitor script), over to you.

Thanks ever so much once again.

I'll be truthful and say that I don't envy you the task. Awfully appreciative that you do so, however.

Question. I've got hold of another F engine manual and was just curious, (with me not having any LC knowledge to brag of), what the main difference will be with this one versus the existing one. It's the 1966 version, PN: 97213, whereas the one that's up there at the moment is PN: 98087. Is it just an age related thing more than anything else? Managed to get the 1964 FJ40 owners manual too.

Matt,
This refers to Snail trail and my collaboration on getting these manuals scanned. I got them not too long ago after what seemed like months in the mail from NZ. There are actually two manuals (1)the 3B, 14B, 15B-F and 15B-FT and (2) the 15B-FTE. I am scanning manual both this weekend and hopefully will get them to you early next week.
John

Spallet,
This isn't a thread hijack but what conversion are you doing, the 14B or the 15B and where did you get the engine? ( possible conceptual hijack over)
John

Interesting. In case you haven't done so already, you may want to check out this thread on this and similar swaps.

Cheers for the explanation John. I'd completely gone into muppet mode on that one.
