White-ish smoke and tune up questions
My 2H runs pretty much smoke free, but on startup after sitting for a few days it belches out a few clouds of white-ishly blue-ish smoke and runs rough until it warms up. It runs well overall, but misses once in a while at about 2200 rpm as well.
I'm thinking after 325k it's due for a tune up. I've changed the oil, filter, and fuel filter, but I'd like to know what are some of the other common tune up items on this engine? |

Howdy! Common sign that you need to do valve seals/guides on both gas and diesel engines. John

white smoke on start up usually is an indication of unburnt fuel.....I would bet that the glowplug system may be alittle suspect....also not sure what there is to tune up on a diesel because there are no sparkplugs....

Valve clearances and injectors are a common "tune-up" items which may turn things around from you. And yes, as was said, check that your glow system is working properly. If it is valve guide seals, you should also notice that it will have been using some oil. Often with bad seals you also get a burst of smoke accelerating after letting it sit on idle for a few minutes. __________________ John G. 姉 ![]() Join the Import Vehicle Owners Association of Canada: Fight for what is right |

No oil burning and no smoke on acceleration, so I'm hoping it's just tune-up issues.
Do any of those injector cleaner additives work, or is it a case of installing new injectors or removing and cleaning the old ones? I suspect the valves could use an adjustment as well. Is this possible without the shop manual? I've done valve adjustments on 4banger gassers before, but not on a diesel 6. I'll try a couple of Rotella T oil changes and long drives - that stuff seems to really smooth things out. |

If it has not had injectors in 325,000 kms it will be in need of new or rebuilt injectors (new nozzels and shimmed for the correct breaking pressure).
Before you do anything, get yourself a manual. Hanynes is better than nothing - but not much IMHO. You may be able to borrow this one from your local library. Best to get a Toyota Shop manual. I suggest you join the Island Cruisers and see if one of them will help you or direct you. See the International section here on MUD. For the injectors, get a few quotes from local qualified fuel injection shops on the cost to rebuild each one. Also, check out the price for new injectors. Sometimes new ones can be cheaper. After what you said in your last post, my gut feeling is that your injector tips are worn and you are having glow system problems: plugs, relay, loose wire, etc. There are lost of posts on glow systems here. Thanks John.
So if the glow plug indicator lights still glows orange and the truck starts fine every time, what kind of glow plug issues could it be having? BTW, how do you like your Safari / Patrol? |

If your glow light is staying on for the right amount of time and you can confirm the voltage and the glow plugs have the correct resistance, then your glow system is probably operating fine. Others on here will be able to give you the right numbers for when you get your electric tester out. Air little air in your fuel system can also give smoke and a rough start. all it needs is to suck in a bit of air. I have never had it or seen it myself but there have been many posts here on it. The usual culprits talked about on MUD are a small pin hole in a fuel line, a bad fuel filter seal or a bad lift pump seal.
I'm loving my Safari after replacing my glow plugs and having my IP rebuilt. You don't want to rebuild an IP. Its one of the quickest unplanned ways to drain your bank account. It probably did not need rebuilding (only 132,000 kms on it) but once you give it to a fuel injection shop for seals, they will want to rebuild it. I can tell you where not to go in the abbotsford area. I didn't know much at the time but got a $2000 education! That blew my money for the lift and a used winch. The rest of the story so far is without drama. There has only been Ford diesel 4Bs and Chev 4Bs in my family and this little Nissan outperforms them all off road at better than 10 L/ 100 kms to boot. I would love to get a diesel cruiser as well. But it would have to be for the wife and be an auto, for her to agree. Here tercel won't last forever. Trying to teach her to drive stick with the Safari. But she doesn't like the RHD. Nice thing about teaching on a diesel is that she hasn't been able to stall it yet.

I say timing timing timing.
See my response to another thread here: http://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/178731-white-smoke-start-up.html Seriously, timing. Craig. __________________ Sadly no longer owning a 70 1993 HDJ81 TLCA # 13682 |

The glow plug light can still come on and show correctly even if the glow plugs are not working. Pull them out and inspect the tips or check the plugs and resistor bar with a multimeter.cheers

I've had pretty good luck with my first attempt at a timing adjustment. Mine would puke a good white cloud when starting cold and a little constantly (driving or idle). I retarded the timing slightly and it smokes less in both cases. I didn't follow the whole FSM procedure. I just loosened the bolts and nudged the pump in a little.
For what it's worth.

The parts are half the cost of a Denso and a total rebuild was under $1000AUD but the average was $400. It's a long story, but in the end I got them to drop the bill by $400. I finally got my truck back after 3 weeks for what they told me was a 3 day job max. I had been warned by one person about them but had also heard good things. I needed my truck in the three days they promised. Like I said it was an expensive lesson. Since then, I have been doing everything myself. If there is something I can't do, I will only take it to ATEB (about 70 kms away).Sorry for the HiJack GBCruiser. But I see you are already doing some checking on the Island Cruiser section for a good Cruiser shop. Good move. Wish I had done the same. It would have saved me a lot of grief. I'd say check the plug to ensure one isn't out. A little smoke on start up after a couple days is normal too. Lots of smoke and rough start is good chance to be glow plug failure in one or more cyl.
Fuel injectors should be removed and serviced. I have the 86 chassis and 2h manual in pdf if you get stuck. pm me __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |
