Starting Problems
I'll give a little background info first.
80 bj 41, rhd. I picked this rig up 2 weeks ago. Drove it 200 miles home. No problems. It starts rough. Lots of white smoke for about 15-20 seconds. There is a choke like switch that when pulled out a little smooths things out. Eventually (15 -20 seconds)things smooth out Went roading on a moderately rough dirt road and now having problems. 1. Taillight fuse keeps burning out. Can't seem to find where short is. 2. While checking out wiring for short, now the LC Wont start. I'll glow for about 10 seconds, then try to start. All I get is one one chug (As to describe it trying to turn over), then when I try to start it again I get this machine gun sounding noise( The starter?), but no turn over. Also while doing this a really noisy alarm sound comes from the dash. I've got this noise before, when I was starting up on a fairly cold morning = 32 degrees, and when I was driving on the freeway coming home. It eventually went away. As for not starting up, the previous owner put in a 12 volt converter to run the radio and 12 volt adapter. I get juice to everything(lights, radio, heater, ect...), but the engine wont turn over. Yesterday, I started it up to back out of my garage into the driveway. Turned it off, wouldn't start, then let it sit for a while and it started up no problem. 3. Another person was having trouble with starting and fusable links were mentioned. I think I found mine, but they are both burned out. What do they do? Could this be an EDIC and or glow plug problem? The previous owner was planning on changing the glow plugs. I don't have much of a history other than what he did since last feb. I'm very much a newbie when it comes to this rig. I'm still trying to figure out what is what. So if I ask stupid questions, have mercy. Any help would be appreciated. Jeff |

I don't think it's a glow problem .. coz you can start sometimes yes and sometimes no .. but when it do do it fine .?
Other thing that come to my mind it's check the EDIC it's pretty easye, just ask the help of your wife when she trying to start you are in the engine room seen how the EDIC arm moves .. Finally I thought it could be a starter issue . ? |

The choke like thing is probably the fast idle and you are supposed to turn it clockwise to increase the idle The fusible links on the battery terminal are just that, fuses, and they protect the circuitry. Replace them as a priority. The petrol landcruisers also have them Im guessing you have weak batteries or a bad starter. I would also clean the battery terminals and and the end of the ground cable to clean metal so you know its getting a solid flow of power. Do the simple stuff 1st before spending money

I read in another link that you replaced the fusible links with automotive wire? How did you go about doing that. I have no toyota dealerships near my home. Jeff |

Just checked out the LC. What I saw that were blown were the 2 fuses in the little black case. What are those? I don't think that the fusible links are blown, because I get juice to the dash, ignition. Will try new batteries.

Well a report to my problems.
I found the short, so taillights work. ![]() The starting problem was the batteries. I talked to a diesel mech, and he said diesels' utilize a lot of compression and you need a lot of juice to start them. The new batteries worked like a charm. I have discovered that there are no fusible links in the LC. I'll need to go to Denver and visit a Toyota dealership, unless any of you know where you can get some online. Thanks again for the direction. Jeff |

You can buy fusible link wire at almost any auto supply store, cheap. You can buy just about anything you need for your cruiser on ebay, craigs list, and numerous internet vendors. I have had my cruiser for almost 5 years and have been to the Toyots dealer twice, one windshield, and one ehaust gasket for the turbo. Ola eric P.S. I was having slow cranking issues, I started by replacing the battery cables with some Napa 2/0 cables(huge), I also made a series of grounding cables to tie the tub, frame and engine together. Starting is much better(higher speed cranking), and the voltage in the wiring harness is almost what is shown at the battery. Last edited by Otterav; 09-30-07 at 09:38 AM. |
