25 year NZ BJ42 import

I have a 1982 BJ42 from new zealnd due to get on a boat in a few days. I had done my research before finding this forum, so I chose a BJ under the 25/21 NHSTA/EPA exemptions.

My question is; what is the actual process? Do I bring the EPA and NHSTA forms to customs, or do I mail them to the respective agencies beforehand? Is there anything else I should be wary of?

BJ42 from NZ on boat

What port are you bringing your cruiser into? Mine came from NZ to Balto ,I used Ian Intl to import her and do all the paper work , went smoothly and reasonable costs,ie about $475 total.

Mine is coming to Long Beach. If I need to use a RI then so be it, however as I understand it the "value added" by the RI would be the "Toyota letter". Again, assuming my understanding is solid, I don't need said letter due to the 25 year NHTSA exemption.

So all things being equal, I'd rather keep my $500, but this is exactly the sort of thing I need to know for sure...

Use a Regi. They do all that for you. This way you just have to deal with DMV. Even with all the right paperwork bringing a diesel into Cali is a pain. Just went through it but worth it.

What an excellent arrangement.

Japan exports it's used cars to Russia and New Zealand. New Zealand exports it's used cars to Canada.

You don't need a toyota letter or an RI to bring in a 25 year old truck. I would send them the paperwork AND bring it if I were you - you can print the forms that you need off of the US customs website. They will have them at the port you are using and technically you shouldn't even have to bring them at all - they are supposed to provide you with the paperwork you need to fill out, but I tried that on the second cruiser that I imported (driving it through) and they couldn't find the forms and I wound up being there for an extra hour while they tried to figure out how to pull it up off of their own website. Good luck!

These are the forms that you need to fill out and bring/mail/fax to them:

EPA 3520-21 - www.epa.gov/otaq/imports/forms/3520-21.pdf

DOT HS-7 -

Cheers!

Thanks moon, I had poked around the respective websites and came to the same conclusion... glad to have some validation.

I also went back through the forum today (slow day at work, heh) and found that it seems like cutoms is pretty easy/straight forward... its apparently the CA DMV thats going to rock my world.

The ~475 number someone gave for an RI, is that for the whole process? Anyone know what it costs just to get the sticker saying EPA exempt from the RI?

good info in this thread. I just added it to the FAQ for importing. If you have not seen the FAQ for importing please look at the top of the forum in the diesel section.

I would suggest not posting your email address on here in the public part of the forum. There are spiders and other forum mining software that search for items like this to send spam to.

PM email address or ph numbers.
