Yes, but you did not need a pyro. Black smoke = back off skinny pedal and drop a gear. I loved my little diesel Rabbit. That thing went everywhere including trails people wouldn't take a truck. It just never went anywhere very fast. It hit 430,000 kms before I sold it and began to leak oil everywhere. Besides the usual oil, filters and brakes, the only thing I replaced on it was one timing belt and the brake lines.
Being slow was its only real draw-back from winning the market. Going down hill it handled like a true sports car. However, people in NA want 0-100 kms in 10 sec not 30 sec. The new turb diesels will do that. All they need to get past now is the image of "dirty diesel". Going into the city tonight I passed a Western Canada Cummins "Bio Truck" which they had labled "the cleanest diesel in the world". So, perhaps the combination of turbo, efficiency and cleaner fuels will put diesel in a higher category than gas in the public's mind. I'd still be happy to have my slow diesel rabbit with the black smoke pyro alarm.
