Hi,

A friend has just had their 24valve engine overhauled at 300k with valve gaps checked, new cam belt, IP and injectors serviced, however the engine had major failures when tested by the garage doing the work.

'Allegedly'....
1. The rocker on the nr 2 piston came off + broke
2. Struck the valve into the piston
3. Broke the valve head off
4. Smashed the face off the cylinder head
5. Destroyed the piston
6. Scored the bore on the block

Firstly, is there any history of the 1HD-FT having problems with the rockers escapping/failing?

Whilst the garage is claiming that this happened on a test run, my guess is that the cam belt was put on wrong, so the timing was off and the engine died when the try to run it.

Either that or they might have over tightened the valves.

What are your thoughts?

Hey Julian,
Honestly I don't see how you could make a mistake with the belt on those engines.
2 valves are activated by each rocker through an intermediate Y shaped pusher, my memory is a bit foggy about that paricular arrangement but I don't see how it could come off by itself, if it comes off the valves are going to be underactivated rather than overactivated and contacting the piston so it's pretty much down to misajustment IMO. Expensive mistake but s*** happens sometimes

Would it start if the belt was put on THAT far out? Surely even if it did there would be loads of noise initially and I don't think that much damage would be done at idle- sounds like a high speed failure. Is it just one cylinder or multiple? Any t-belt misadventure should show up on more than one cylinder. Ask for the old parts.

I have seen this happen before. Infact i still have the piston here somewhere as a remembrance. This was the only one i know of and have seen, but i´ve heard of atleast two others. Supposedly the rocker arms do break when the engine is pushed to high revs.

The engine i´ve seen was not touched before this happened. It just broke.
Small detail. The owner of the rig drove around 1500 KM´s like this before it wouldn´t start anymore.

hi
I own a 1995 HDJ81 (1HD-FT) and the something from the valve train fell into the engine and had to rebuild whole engine.

according to my local garage, valve clips need to be inspected for wear and tear and replaced immediately when necessary. I just had mine replaced (48 pieces) today 12-13-2008

engine was rebuilt sometime in 2005, i live in North Borneo and its a Land Cruiser haven here so 1HD-FT with valve problems are quite common and probably rampant with the 1HD-FT engines. High boost from turbo reduces lifespan of the valve clips and watch the retainers as well.

Other than that its a great engine for overland travel, effortless on the open roads. Even the noise from the valve train sounds like it just rolled off a showroom after the replacement.
