yes, I would not run with out one. It allows the engine to be at the right temp all the time. So it gets the best mileage when not too hot or too cold.

Some say with out the restriction the engine cannot take away the heat, and it could overheat...

I think with out the t-stat the engine will run too cool and your mpg will suffer as lower combustion/more friction will result... I dunno. Wanna try.

As for just running water... your asking for corrosion in the system. Water cools better. But it has no corrosion protection or lubrications. And for northerners no anti-freeze.

Eleblanc, if your coolant is green and has no discolourations, such as dirt or rust look. And is testing fine, there is no reason to change it. Telling people to change it every five years is to keep things on a schedule. For dummies or as my friend says "the lowest common denominator of people".

But if it looks good and tests..... your there. IMOP

It looked good and tested fine. Since then i cleaned my rad ( i beleive it was my issue when i started this thread), since then i have 4.88 instead of 4.11, and motor runs higher rev but cooler (higher in the power band), and on top i've change exhaust from 2" to 2 1/4" and it runs about 5 deg cooler, but EGT has drop at least 150 deg F with bigger exhaust.

Again on the subjet but, now i'm running the tubo, i'd like to hear about the others running a turbo what temp do they reach on heavy load.

last weekend i went wheeling for the weekend, when i drove up there it was hot, but nothing super hot. I mean 28 deg C outside temp. On a very steap climb on the highway like you rarely see. I was able to keep 90kph with the loaded m101 in the rear but...temp went up to 230 deg C. I had to drop around 85 to stop the rising heat, and start the inside ventilation. At 230 the stock gauge hit the first right mark.

Last year after i started this thread i check the coolant, the color was fine and it tested ok.

A month ago i changed my T-stats for a 82 deg C. But when i changed it, the old one was already a 82 deg C. So i didn't really notice a change.

So what high numbers you guys running turbo have reached? Should i stop when i reach numbers like 230? what is critical for my 3B, at what temp should i decided to hit the side of the road?

Running on flat road it runs at 200-210, in hot weather pulling my m101.

I'd like to find out if this is not normal temps. before starting to see what could improve the temperature. i've got 8 liters of motormaster diesel coolant here, I will flush the liquid and change it in the next days, is this coolant fine, or i should look for something else. After the collant change, if i still have issue, what is next? rad ?.

Since i've been monitoring my temps i've decreased the fuel, thus lower EGT, to see if it would help water temp, but it did not really.

Maybe it is just normal when you are running 10 psi boost for 5-10 minutes..

Let me know your experience....
