Question Few questions re BJ40

Hello All,

I have a few questions about some work I am doing on attempting to renovate a BJ40. I recently bought two which will make one fairly good one. I know that one has a B engine (from ID plate) and I am fairly sure the other has a B also.

1. The fuel filter is simply attached by a few cable ties to some of the electrical cables. Is there supposed to be a mounting bracket or frame of some kind for it?

2. How do I know if the 2nd LC has a B engine? I looked for the usual signs (as in FAQ). There's no frame number that I can find, no ID plate or VIN plate, and no engine number that I can find. There is a number printed just under the air intake on block. It is of the form 5digits-5digits. Is this a unique ID number or an engine code?

3. Is synthetic oil ok in this engine? Does it matter? A recent thread came up about loss of performance, leaks using synthetic but on a different engine type.

4. Did these machines come with sun-roof as an option? One of mine has one.

5. When I was having a look underneath I tried to twist the drive shaft from the transfer case to front wheels, also to rear wheels. There is about an eighth of a turn of play in both. Is this normal?

Apologies for all the different types of questions. I am sure that I will have many more over the next while. I had a look at search but no success. Any information is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Michael

Hi Mike The engine if it was a B diesel would look similar? They have a 2 inch high B molded onto the engine block.

The fuel filter is normally attached to the engine ,near the pump.

I would not use synthetic oil. Any alleged benefits have probably passed these engines by and thus, wasted money

No sunroofs in 40 series as far as I know. The 1st were the 60 and 70 series.

There is some slop in the t/case but that sounds a little too much.

You could have a look on the front right chassis rail behind the front wheel for a frame number.

Thanks for the reply Rosco.

I have only taken delivery of 1 of them so far. I remember seeing the ID plate on the one that I do not have yet. That one is a B. I can compare when I get it. Do you happen to have a picture of the frame / fixture that the fuel filter sits in/on? Thanks again.

1/8th turn is quite a bit, not the end of the world but deffinately a sign of wear inside...unless it gets worse or the clunk going from first to reverse starts to bug you, i wouldn't worry too much.
<but then i am not a perfectionist so take that into consideration>
