2B nightmare
OK; this thing is kicking my ass! Every ting we try to do or fix either does not exist or comes from Japan! A big thanx to Kevin @ 4Wheel Auto who not only knows about this but does not laugh at me too hard!
So I got a 2B in a 8/80 BJ41. Posted on here for a factory tach, thanx for the info, and found one at SOR for a screaming deal. Got the tach and PU. Where does the PU go? From my conversation with Kevin sounds like the tach pick up goes into a threaded boss between the starter boss and the top of the bellhousing. I have no hole or boss so it looks to me like there is not a factory provision for a tach PU in that location. Anyone got PICs of where the PU goes on a B/3B? WIll a B/3B bellhousing fit the back of a 2B? Do all b/3B trucks come with factory tachs so I can assume that any B/3B bellhousing that I get used will have the boss? Anyone ahve a used b/3b bellhousing for sale? Failing the replacement of the bellhousing any ideas on an inductive tach PU available aftm that can run off a crank trigger? Anyone want to buy a cruiser business cheap? __________________ David Dearborn www.urbanlandcruisers.com Foreign Minister for life of the White Trash of the Elwood Chapter. I collect Hello Kitty |

Dunno if this helps David, however this thread has a picture I posted of the pick up location on the bellhousing. Uses the Hall sensor effect. Dunno either if a 3B housing would fit, however there are a few cast 3B/H41/42/55F housings laying around, and they did come with the pickup threads...if spec'd on the trim. http://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/68609-tach-wiring-2h.html
The joys of older and none north american cruisers eh? It's all good. Think of the knowledge you will have when you are done with it. For future reference, in the diesel section there has been a fair bit of tech and talk about tach/diesels...I re-discovered some interesting threads while going through this:http://forum.ih8mud.com/search.php?searchid=1741790 hth's gb |

A couple clarifications. The 2B bell housing is cast iron and will need a pick up for such. The aluminum bell housing version is longer. It's possible you could put a jam nut on it though I guess. The bell housing on the 2B will have a flat spot cast in the correct location for the pickup. It just needs to be drilled and tapped. The pickup simply counts teeth (hall effect?) there are no magnets in the flywheel.
I've tossed many of these bellhousings. If you don't want to drill and tap yours, ask around for one from an '80-84 BJ60 __________________ Rocky Mountain Land Cruiser Association TLCA # 5513 '87BJ74, '86BJ70, '78FJ45, '53M100, '90M101cdn I support our Troopies |

Great info. Drilling and tappng cast iro seems like a PITA. Maybe a 3B housing to make life easy...it is all pulled apart now.
What is the airgap between the end of the pick upa nd the teeth of the flywheel? I assume it is in line with the flywheel as well? __________________ David Dearborn www.urbanlandcruisers.com Foreign Minister for life of the White Trash of the Elwood Chapter. I collect Hello Kitty |
