Oil filter keeps Blowing off!

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I'm very impressed with all the info available. I have a problem with my 1987 FJ 60. The Oil filter has blown apart three times now in the last 2 years. The threaded part stays on the mount, but the entire outer shell comes off, along with all of the oil of course. Each time I put a new one on It will last a few months and than blow off. There is a pressure relief valve on the oil filter mount, which I have removed and inspected, but it does not appear to be damaged and it appears to be freely moving. Also the spring looks O.K. The oil pressure gauge appears to working properly (The pressure stays within the normal range). As a side note the Toyota Dealer gave me a diagram of where to find the pressure relief valve for the oil pump but I can't find it. I should be able to access it from the outside of the engine on the lower left side. Do I need to remove the oil pan? Can anyone offer any suggestions? Its a 2H engine.

I haven't changed the oil in my truck before yet but one thing that was brought to my attention was making sure if the rubber seal on the bottom of the filter is off?

Maybe one of the rings from the previous filters was left on there and it's causing issues..

But it could be other things too..

If it is a 2H (6 cyl 4liter diesel), then it is probably a HJ60, not a FJ60.
Anyway, it seems the oil pressure is too high at the filter. The factory gauges are very unreliable, you probably should test the pressure witha real pressure gage.
Is it possible that you are getting really cheap filters? are the original toyota filters blowing apart?

could be a couple reasons , maybe the return line from the oil mount on the engine block is partially blocked , the oil filter may not suit the engine as there different types of filters around , some of the cheaper ones limit oil flow back into the motor , especially cheaper Fram brand , etc . there s a big oil filter investiagtion on here that someone has got form another site ( awesome ), look for it - possibly other reasons too .

Thanks for the replies. My mistake it is an HJ 60 not an FJ 60. I'm using only genuine Toyota filters.

crappy filters could be the cause. Is the oil pressure gauge reading normal pressures? i wonder if something could be plugged up post filter causing high pressures at the filter, like part of a filter that broke off.
