HJ47 & BJ42 Diesel Engines will not turn off - 12 volt systems

I have several diesel TLCs - 2H and 3B engines. All are 12 volt systems. I have an '83 HJ47 pickup with a 2H engine that will not turn off. Also, the battery is drained in a matter of days if I don't disconnect it when parked. When I reconnect the battery I hear a clicking sound under the glove box. My others don't do this.

I also now have a '84 BJ42 LX that will not turn off.

Well, I have been told the problem is one of three things:
- EDIC - fuel shut off motor under the engine
- Fuel Control Relay - small elec box under glove box
- Ignition switch

Tried a new (used) Fuel Control Relay on the HJ47 - did not fix it. Tried another EDIC on the BJ42 - did not fix it.

Am I on the right track? How can I test the ignition switch? Or, perhaps it is some other wiring problem. Both cars are in very good condition. The BJ42 problem just started - this car is in mint condition and has had only one owner since it was brand new (I'm number 2).

Check the ground on all you have mentioned above. Had a similar issue on a ranch truck. An old international pickup with a nissan turbo diesel in it. It was 12volts and had a run on issue like you have stated. Found out a control in the dash had grounded itself to the body. Might be a good place to start.

Sounds like it's the edic control box under the dash/passenger side panel/etc.It can get shorted or coroded by water or its relay contacts can be pitted from use.

You can shut the engine off by manually actuating the injection pump lever forward, you van install a lever into the dash to do that, along with a single button glow plug switch it's an easy mod to do.

If you are handy with electronics and can figure out what is wrong with the control box, there are a couple small relays in there that can have pitted contacts. I fixed mine like that.
