1HZ-T????
hey fellas i'm just figuring out how to use this forum thing so bear with me. I'm thinking about buying a HJZ73. Can a turbo be bolted up without comprimising the engine? Does a 1HZ have piston cooling jets, oil cooler, head and injection pump same as a 1HZ-T??? Will this engine survive if driven and maintained???
thanks, nate dogg |

Hi Nate,
The Australians have been turbo-ing the 1HZ for years, the Japanese do it as well. Some guys on the board have done it and I plan on doing it next year sometime. There are kits available for it but most will tell you to turbo if the engine has not had a hard life or high kms. Regards, and post a pic! __________________ Louis Check out my youtube videos at: www.youtube.com/lshobie Join the True North Toyota Land Cruiser Club in Ottawa http://landcruisers.ca/ |

i have installed a number of turbos on the 1PZ,1HZ, 3B and they respond very well to a turbo. it isn't the turbo that kills an engine it is the driver...
do a compression test, if the compression is good then go for it... cheers and good luck Welcome from Calgary Alberta __________________ pulling this info out of my ass so take it with a pound of salt "People are poor because they don't spend money wisely, tough sh!t !!! I recently bolted a turbo to my HZ engine. It was easier than I thought. I went to a junkyard, bought the intake and exhaust manifolds as well as the turbo from a blown up 1hdt motor. I had the turbo rebuilt, Plumbed in the oil feed line from the oil pressure sender, Welded a return line in the oil pan. Blocked off the water lines to the turbo and hooked it up to the air filter using the factory 1Hdt hoses. You can't really tell that the engine is a 1HZ from looking at it cause all the 1Hdt parts bolt right up.
Performance is really good, and egt's have dropped considerably. A lot more torque is available. I really recomend it.

thanks for the info guys, sounds like it'd make a 73 boot pretty good, If i go ahead i think i need to figure out an intercooler setup. maybe an old volvo intercooler since i don't see any aftermarket setups, i'm guessing space is tight

You guessed it
![]() They left the intercooler off the current model 78-79 series with the 1HD FTE because of room. According to Toyota they were concerned the cramped engine bay was slowing the draught of air through the radiator. Maybe they really didnt want a cab chassis or troopy that could leave a $70K 100 series Sahara behind
