tapping noise....valves or something else?

Hello

This is my first time on this posting board. i have a 1987 HJ60 2H engine, and on Christmas eve I went to start it, and there was a loud tapping sound. Over the last month it has had no sounds coming from it but there was blue smoke coming out and then not apparent after it was warmed up. Please tell me what this is, recommend some good diesel mechanics in my area (Vancouver island) and tell me that it is not a huge fix!! thanks for any comments

Maybe Radd Cruisers can help. He is on the island. Also you could post in the BC coastal or Vancouver island cruiser club forums on here. Just look in the contents forum page, near the bottom you will find them.

Welcome to the board.

I suspect a glowplug problem. The loud tapping would be the bad detonation on a cylinder as it warms up. guessin of course.

But if no one answers with a good mech on this section, I suggest you try the club section like I mentioned above.

brownbear - I was wondering (sorry for the highjack, sassy, but it is realted to your problem and may help), could it be possible to attach a sound file in a post so one could submit a sound just like one submits a picture?
