Diesels in the US

Information found on this board and others has been extremely helpful to me since I decided to turn my life over to diesel cruiser adiction. One area where there was limited first hand experience was in registering converted diesels here in US. To be certain the laws differ from state to state, but here's my experince in Washington.

Installed guts from CDN BJ60 into US registered FJ60. Donor truck was driven south across the border where sadly it broke down and was a total loss. I happened upon it by chance and rescued it from the wrecking yard.

Truck inspected by WSP on 12-21-06, passed vehicle safety inspection/VIN verification.
Tested in Seattle at emissions testing station to DIESEL vehicle standard 12-21-06, PASSED.
New vehicle registration issued by DOL on 12-21-06 good through 02-2008 with vehicle designated as DIESEL powered vehicle.

SO... that was that. I've since contacted my pal at the DOE and questioned him about exactly how new of a vehicle could I do this with and he says 1996 because of the OBD. I don't know what that is, but it seems like it might be a technical issue rather than a legal one.

That's what I've learned. Thanks for all the help along the way!

On a gasser, the OBD is the On Board Diagnostic... Maybe '96 is when they came out with the OBDII?

A few years ago I bought an '87 HJ60 that had been imported to Montana from Canada. To get it up to snuff in Warshingon all I had to do was get it emissions tested. I did that using B100. It passed fine. Im not sure it would have if I had tried it on standard diesel. This year I'll have to get it emissions tested (odd years only) as well. This time she's got a 1995 HZ in her so she should pass no problems. I didnt have to do any state patrol inspections. In fact I was told the state patrol no longer did inspections.

Perhaps since your rig was originally titled as a diesel when you bought it the state patrol inspection was not needed? I think I only needed it due to the fuel change. Your swap from a 2H to a 1HZT would likely not even be noticed. They didn't bother to look under my hood.

fe sus, is it your BJ60 that is on craigslist? It said could also sell with vanity plates? I remember someone posting the plates on here, I thought it was you.

The truck has a nice lift, little tires, but is super clean. For sale for about 11K.

BrownBear- that's the first conversion. I put the smaller AT tires on it for a road-trip where I was afraid the 33" muds would not be able to handle the snow. I still have them and they will go with the truck. I like the plates... if the purr from under the hood doesn't get people's attention, the plates do...
