2LT-II hard start when cold
Hi there,
Recently in Edmonton we've been getting -15C to -22C and my 1990 Hilux Surf has had some trouble starting. It will turn over and over and over and over (thank God for the dual battery setup), but not catch. It usually takes two tries to get it going and about 45 seconds of turning over (yes I know it's not good for the starter). I had 15w40 oil until yesterday when I switched it to 5w40 semi-synthetic (hopefully it doesn't develop leaks), but it still does the same thing. I put Howe's in everytime I fillup and I usually fill up at Husky so I'm pretty sure it's not crappy diesel. The glow system seems fine, but I'm going to check it tomorrow to make sure. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Wes __________________ 1990 Hilux Surf with a 2LT-II 1991 HDJ81 Land Cruiser 1991 Carib (Corolla) |

Wes,
these engines are a bitch to start. are you plugging in? you really need to. a manual glow system might help but i have not bothered to install one since the wifes DD has the wabasto and the one i drive has a lower rad hose heater... __________________ pulling this info out of my ass so take it with a pound of salt "People are poor because they don't spend money wisely, tough sh!t !!! Hi Wayne,
I went all last winter without plugging it in once and never had a problem. But, just to be sure I plugged it in today for an hour before trying to start it and it still did the same thing. Wes __________________ 1990 Hilux Surf with a 2LT-II 1991 HDJ81 Land Cruiser 1991 Carib (Corolla) |

Guess I'll have to test my glow plugs tomorrow.
My girlfriend's truck won't start at all. We (Daryl and I) spent all day taking out the rad, getting it welded and putting it back in...without a garage outside in -25C (somebody touched the rad while trying to boost it, but we won't go there). Fun. Even with a boost it will just barely turn over a few times and that's about it. We tried different cables and wiggled the connections many times....nothing. Any ideas on this one? yep, get the truck inside and let it warm up, then install a lower rad hose heater and change the oil to 0/30 semi syth. test the starter for drag at the same time...
or give it a shot of easy start and hope you don't damage anything... cheers __________________ pulling this info out of my ass so take it with a pound of salt "People are poor because they don't spend money wisely, tough sh!t !!! Got no where to get it inside. Has 10w30 oil in it just a couple weeks ago. Already has a rad hose heater. Already had a visit from the Ether Bunny, but it won't turn over fast enough to suck it inside.
We just put warm coolant in it since we had to drain the rad and it's plugged in right now. We'll wait another hour and then try boosting it again. It's like it's not getting enough juice from the boost somehow. The boost will charge the battery just a little bit and it will turn over a few times really slowly and then that's it. When that someone touched the rad it sparked and blew a hole in it. Would that have blown anything out? pull that battery and stick a different one in and try again.
with the block heater and fresh warm coolant you should be firing up easily... __________________ pulling this info out of my ass so take it with a pound of salt "People are poor because they don't spend money wisely, tough sh!t !!! But doesn't boosting it essentially bypass (or at least take it out of the picture) the battery?

no, if the pattery isn't taking a charge then there isn't enough juice to do the job...

You were right. We took one battery from my truck and put it in hers. Boosted it and it started up...not very happy, but it started. What a coinsidence that she is on her way over with a brand new Optima Redtop that happen to get replaced today. I'll throw that in when she gets here and she's off!
Thanks Wayne! Wes __________________ 1990 Hilux Surf with a 2LT-II 1991 HDJ81 Land Cruiser 1991 Carib (Corolla) |
