Q. re A442F temps with 1HDT

Regarding the text below: I pulled this out of the EGT thread - I may be misunderstanding the statement below from Jonathon, but are you saying that anywhere with big hills, one should be running the extreme upgrade? Or was that with specific reference to the truck discussed in that thread?

Ouch! That's painful. Yep, once you are out of overdrive it's BBQ time. Downshifting to keep the revs up helps a bit (lugging the tranny seems to make the temps climb even more quickly), but there's no substitute for a temp gauge.

Rodney said he was developing a kit that will allow T/C lockup in all gears even with the all-hydraulic A442F on our 1HD-T's. It will require an air source apparently. I'm not sure what the status of this project is, but it is definitely something that would be a must-have anywhere with big hills.

That's not the extreme upgrade I was talking about. It was a mod Rodney was talking about that would let you lock the T/C in *any* gear. I don't think this mod is available yet. AFAIK the extreme upgrade only locks the T/C in 4th or 3rd, not 1st or 2nd.

I find I'm frequently climing steep logging roads in 2nd or 3rd and watching the tranny temp climb, and wishing I could lock the T/C in 2nd. But I do find that keeping the revs high (over 2600 rpm) minimizes the temp climb.

Do you find it helps to put the tranny into low range? I heard this is recommended. My last long offroad hill climb had the temp up very quick but I didn't try low because traction wasn't a problem.

I can't see why it would make any difference so long as you can get the revs high enough in high range 1st or 2nd. If you are lugging the tranny in H/R 1st up a really steep hill then sure, change down to L/R and get the revs up around 2800 rpm to keep the temps down. But the hills I'm powering up aren't usually steep enough to require L/R. When they are that steep, I'm going slower and tranny temps aren't an isssue.
