Its Alive!!!!!! Hj-60

So the HJ-60 is up and running. After a last minute search we tracked down the last three valve springs, had them overnighted, got the engine the next day and after a good weekend in the garage its road-worthly (lots of surpise rusty brakelines and other stuff). It runs great. What RPM should it be taken to while in the break in period? I know you want to vary the RPM and load it some, but how close to redline do I want to be taking the engine? Is 3500 a good max RPM while loading during break in?

Thanks to everyone on this forum, and 4Wheel Auto, Specter off-road, and some industrial fork lift place in Green Bay,WI, we managed to get it going in time to break it, and get it driveable before having to head from Michigan to California.

I have never taken my 2H above ~3100 RPM as it starts to scare me at that point. Maybe I'm just chicken but it just doesn't 'feel' right.

x2 and I would only do that when overtaking. I would say normal cruising at about 2500.
These engines are only a generation away from tractor engines. They were really designed for 3rd world countries where they amble along a 60-70 klms per hour with a full load on bad roads.
Some people talk about them being able to cruise all day at 120-130klm but thats crap if you want to get 500000+ from the engine.

max RMP

Seems real smooth all the way up close to 3500. Not cruising, just overtaking and accelerating. Seems to cruise at just over 2000 RPM at about 100 km/h. We've got more than we were planning to in it but its well worth it.

I only push to 3000 rpm when under load and I'm trying to hit peak power band for the next gear.

Are a lot of HJ-60's 4 speeds? At 2500 rpms it runs at about 115 km/hr. Its a 5 speed. Its got some little tires too, with 31's or 32's it would probably do 120 km/hr at 2500 rpm.

All the pre 84 60 series are 4 speeds.
I know they will do over 120 but I was only emphasisng their intended use.
Im not sure about your roads but here once you leave the city most sections of road are only suitable for 100-110 kph in a landcruiser if the conditions are good.
The wrecking yards here are full of rolled over cruisers.
I would say with 31 they would be doing close to 3000 rom at 120
With 33 they are doing 2450 rpm at 110kph in 5th
