4BT/700R4 FJ60 Conversion Questions

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone done a 4bt/700R4 conversion in a FJ60? If so, can you please share some of the surprises you ran into? I would also like to share/compare shopping list of "stuff" with you.

Thank you,

I have emailed and talked to them. Very nice and helpful folks.

Did anything specific happen that made the head gasket/head go bad, like overheating? I was planning on using my FJ60 radiator with a taurus fan.

hard to tell for sure. it was running warmer than any of the others hes done. it probably had a bad head gasket to begin with.

im not sure, but i dont think that the 60s radiator will fit when everything is in there.

cheers,
herb

Will the 700R4 hold-up to the torque pulses of the 4bt? Can a 700R4 be built to take more power? I am thinking about a 4bt conversion and it must have an auto tranny. I was thinking an FJ60/62 transfer case with rebuilt stock Toyota axles.

I talked to a person at bowtieoverdrives.com and they build 700r4s for diesel applications. They said it was not a problem.

So, source either a nice running, low miles 4bt or buy a core and rebuild it. I hear they are pretty simple. Buy a 700R4 from my local wrecking yard ($100.00) and rebuild it with a heavy duty rebuild kit and new torque converter, purchase an adapter kit with the chevy bellhousing bolt pattern. What transfer case to use? Stock FJ40 or a newer split case out of a FJ60/62?

Where is a good place to buy the adapter for the 4bt to 700r4 tranny?

the th700 will hold up just fine if built properly. i built one for a frined to go behind a 6bt a few years ago......

just make sure you start with the right core (88 thru 92) and have it built by somebody who knows what they're doing. don't skimp on the converter either or you'll live to regret it in no time at all. diesels require an HD converter with a much lower stall.
