Starter problem - Doesn't fully disengage

Started my 1990 HDJ81 up this morning and heard this tinny sound.

Thought it was my BEB's as I was intending to do them on Tuesday and Murphy's Law would have it that way.

Did some investigating and found it was the starter.

It seems the starter doesn't fully disengage. It stops spinning but the gear hits the flywheel causing the noise.

I removed the starter. The first bolts were fine but it was that top one hidden by all the wiring that was a pain.

I needed a wobble socket, an extension and an impact gun.

After taking it apart it seems that the gear will only sit flat when it is not put together. If you split the starter it springs back to where it should be.

The gear is only supposed to turn one direction and lock when turned the other way. Mine seems to spin either way which would make it the clutch according to the FSM.

The FSM also states if the gear does not retract it is the magnetic switch.

I'm going to bring it by a local rebuilder to see if has the correct parts.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Does anyone have the parts list for the starter? If I remember the part number for the complete starter is 28100-17010(?) It's at my shop right now so it's from memory.

I have the exploded view from the FSM but part numbers would be great.

Thanks

Dan in Calgary

Thanks for the replies. Gave it to Mac's Auto Electric. $125 for the rebuild.

In the future you may want to start with a search...

This is a common problem with some nasty consequences. Search is your friend for immediate response....
