slaughterhouse gulch.....

Just trying to get a feel for who all might be going on the October trail run through Slaughterhouse Gulch.

I was the main motivation for putting this trail on the calendar, so I feel it would only be fair if I attended.

Chuck is scheduled to be trail leader, but if hunting season is still in full swing I would be glad to take over. (let me know)

Of course, my main wheeler is currently undergoing rear suspension surgery--so I will be attempting this trail in my trusty rusty stock '88 pickup.

The red rust sled made it through all the hardest lines on Hackett Gulch with ease this weekend, after the mudflaps and swaybar were removed, so I'm feeling pretty confident in her abilities. The swaybar being gone made virtually no difference in on-road handling, but made made a huge difference offroad. the rear tires stayed on the ground almost all day and this was one of the most fun wheeling days I've had in a while. Getting back to a stock rig is a blast!!

Would really like to see some long lost faces on this run, The trail is not that difficult, and the scenery should be outstanding with the fall colors! Anyone for camping? hope everyone can make it.--- Luke

Trevor, bringing the 4runner would be awesome, and save you a lot of gas money too! (you are bringing your own gas this time, right?)

Not sure about JT's party, will have to see what's going on as I get closer to the weekend, but I should try to make it, his parties rock!!

I did get my parts ordered from Marlin Crawler today, so the plasma cutter/ sawzall/ grinder 'fest is definitely going to happen soon!

Thought I could make it until I realized it was the 10th. We'll be tent camping in Yellowstone that weekend. Too cold in the hills to camp? ...not for my 10 year old daughter

Nov. is out as well... elk thing in western Colorado. Maybe Dec. ...bummer

I plan on being there. I still need to replace a broken leaf spring but Darryl is going to bring a set on Oct 3 so I should be able to up and running by then.

I'm going to make it, if I can get the kids moving that early! Rear locker isn't working, but hopefully won't be to much of an issue.

No, electrical is fine - the motor runs. Must be a bad bushing or broken spring. Haven't had a chance to tear into it that far yet. And the front works fine, so I can have at least 3-wheel drive

Fun run today, but long - went up Red Cone also! 218 miles & almost 12 hours from when I filled up at the Western this a.m. to when I passed it again on the way home. Be glad you guys stopped at the top of the mountain - it's still an icy bitch down here!

Long Yes, But fun very much so!

I filled up at the Loaf and Jug in Pueblo West at 5:45 this morning, got home about an hour and a half ago at about 8pm. Somewhere close to 300 miles!

The "official" part of the run was uneventful and quick so luckily Chuck decided that we should venture further. We ended up going up Guanella (sp) pass which was also uneventful. (At least till I get the pic posted of the "event" that happened at the top of the pass.)

Once again we had too much time left to just pack up and go home, so Chuck suggested Red Cone. The problem arouse when I ended up the first one turning off of 285. I saw the turn off to Red Cone, but didn't know it at the time. So we ended up going up Webster Pass. We came to a point about 300 yards or so from the top of the pass where I did not think I could make it without sliding off and making my wife the benificiary of a large life insurance policy. While she does need some things for "her" Cruiser, I thought it not in "my" best interest to proceed futher. So everyone had to back about a half a mile back down Webster Pass because of me. There were 2 Jeeps that had went before us and were starting to come back down as we walked to the top. They were narrower than I and Eric so didn't have as much problem getting up. (I must insert at this point that I have NO problem flopping, rolling a vehcile as long as the count ends at somewhere around 1. The location we were in the count would have been somewhere around 4 at which point I would have lost the ability to breathe, live, etc.) While we were headed down I saw them get out and check out the area, so maybe I wasn't as much of a chicken as I thought. I think Luke, Mike (I hope that's his name) and maybe even Chuck could have made it through, but they had those wide long slithering 80's with them. Wish I could have brought the 40, but I would have frozen to death. (Once again the Mrs would have been rich!)

Every time this year I have went on a club run I have had a great time, you would think I would realize I need to go on more of them!

Ha - I didn't know that was Webster ... thought that it was Red Cone. I've never been on either.

Anyway, I hope those jeeps made it down ok. Before they got out checking again, one of them had pulled in and then backed out of it again. That was a dicey spot, even for a narrow vehicle.

I had a great time, as did my daughter Claire. This trip was a long one, but I think you need those every now and then, especially when it is probably going to be the last trip of the season without lots of snow.

Was more of an expedition event than a trail ride. Great scenery. I will NEVER bring an IFS/31" shod rig on red cone/webster pass again though, I think I may have ruptured my speen on the way down.

I disagree, Eric's family as well as my daughter and I were rolling rocks down the side of the dropoff only to watch them go all the way to the bottom and break into pieces.......I think that cruiser might have rolled more like 24 times! but being an 80, would probably have stayed in one piece. lol

It worries me to have to watch a friend roll off something like that, hope I never have to.

The rust sled did hold it's own on the trail, and I think I came home with just about all the rust I started with, and while it was a change, I really can't wait to get the 4runner out of the garage!

I meant that I would have COUNTED 4 at which point I would have been dead and the Cruiser would continue transporting what was left of my body to the bottom.

24 was a pretty good guess at the number, I told the Mrs that I had decided not to try something stupid, and I don't think she believed me.

Here are a few of the pictures I took. The trails were not that difficult but I did break two shock mounts. This was the second time the 60 was off road since I installed some new Bilstein shocks. I guess the Bilsteins are stiffer than the Rancho 9000's and put more pressure on the shock mounts. Nothing a little welding can't fix.
