The delorme maps are O.K. , but they tend to be more helpful to hikers and backpackers than to 4x4 guys. I would not recommend it to someone looking to drive through the backcountry. There are a ton of forest roads that are not in the gazeteer. mostly elevation and topography stuff.
The colorado road and rec. map is a great book, I have one and use it constantly on road trips through colorado. It really helps in the small towns you drive through because it has most of the paved roads marked. However, there are still some good back roads that are not marked very well. The nice thing is it tells you which roads are 4x4 roads, and not just a dirt road to someone's house.
The Charles Wells books are the best for 4wheeling type trips, showing camp spots and levels of difficulty, and when used with the road and recreation map, you can put together a really good road trip.
have fun.
