Crate Motor Engine Swaps & Emissions
I was digging through the FAQ's and emissions threads but can't find a reference for crate motor swaps. Since there is no "year" associated with the motor how do they identify emissions stuff. My FJ40 is currently registered as a 76 and I have a SBC in it now. If the 76 had an air pump how do I put one on my carb'd 383?
I could swap some tub parts and register it as a bit older vehicle but then my frame and tub numbers won't match, I have a scabplate covering most of the VIN anyway though... I'm currently in FL and am looking for places to retire that are more in line with my recreational wants. I was stationed in CO for 4 years long ago after being in MT for 18 years and the mountains reminded me of home. Can anyone shed some light on this??? thank you for your time. |

I think I found my answer. If nothing else the emissions would follow the year of the vehicle meaning I would need to have AI+EGR per my hood sticker just on a 383 instead of a 2F. If it pans out I may have it titled as a 70 instead, just a lot more work... Since the only part of the frame horn exposed is "FJ40" should work out.

If your coming back to Colorado Springs you wont need an E-Test under the current rules. My 76 also has a small block.. The first place i took it told me i needed an air pump, but i just went to a different guy and he passed me..
![]() Register it as a collector car, and you only have to get one E-Test as long as you stay current every 5 years renewing it! __________________ 1976 FJ40 TBI350 700R4 D300 SOA Locked 37" PBR's Protected by REDLINEColorado Land Cruisers - Club Redline Land Cruisers - Safety First CrAwLoRadO.com - Just Check it out

Thanks for the input. Did you have any problems passing with your SBC? carb'd? Do you see any problems in registering the truck with the VIN on the frame horn covered by a S/R?

I have an 88 FJ62 with a 1990 TBI 350 sbc in it. I came from CA and when I registered it here they did not even go out and look at it. I went to the DMV and paid the reg dues and they handed me my plates. It was that easy! Like Trevor said if you move to Colorado Springs you don't need to worry about emissions under the current rules.
