Planning a spring break trip to CO

So I am planning a spring break trip to CO for my friends and I. I have never been and the general consensus is that we would like to go wheeling one day, then do skin' the next then back to wheeling. We are flexible and are coming from Longview, TX. I have heard Montrose and Ouray are some good places. I would really like to be within 45 min drive of trails and the hills. any sugestions would be appreciated. if it helps the dates we will be going are. March 7th 2008-March 16 2008. We will be taking a very capable Durango on 39.5 IROK's and a stock FJC and an 80 series. Thanks for your help in advance

Sean

ouray is more scenic, montrose more challenging..

how built is the 80 and FJC? montrose is pretty hard core from the photos ive seen!

Colorado4x4.org is a great place to look at trip reports, and photos to get an idea of what the trails are like, and possibly get some other people to meet up with you when the time comes!

traildamage.com is also a great place to look for trails.

My guess is that by Spring break most everything in Ouray will still be closed. Most of the high altitude stuff won't be passable.

You could always ski in breckenridge and run to Chinamans Gulch near buena vista for the day. That trail stays pretty snow-free.

If you are planning on staying in Breckenridge, stay in Frisco. Breck is pretty pricey, Frisco has a Holiday Inn and a Budget Inn ? that are cheaper that the places in Breck. If you are going to be hitting some of the other ski areas around (Vail/Beaver Creek, Copper Mtn. Loveland) Frisco is more centrally located.

I've gotten some killer deals at the Holiday Inn in Frisco from priceline.com - but that's typically last-minute stuff. As others have said, wheeling opportunities may be pretty thin (or rather, to thick!) that time of year.
