metberry work days sept 30/Oct 1

This is copied from Colorado4x4.org

Quote:
09/12/06: The next work weekend is Saturday and Sunday, September 30 and October 1. Due to the recent heavy rains, Metberry needs additional work before it can be opened. We are meeting at 9am at the trail head of Metberry each morning. The gate will be closed at 9am so please be on time. If you have not signed up, you must sign up to be allowed on the trail. The sign-up sheets are available at the Nevada location and at the Drennan location. The sign up sheets have been reopened for new signatures. The sign-up sheets will be submitted to Teller County at close of business on Tuesday, September 19. You must be signed up prior to that time. The work is hard and dirty. You should bring gloves, lunch, rain gear, sun screen and insect repellent. We work rain or shine (under safe conditions only). If you have post hold digger, shovel, mallet or a big hammer for driving spikes, please bring it. If you intend to participate, p lease email jerry@predator4wd.com and let him know that you will be going. We certainly can use the help!
I am planning on being there on the 30th.

Must be signed up by close of busniess tomorrow to participate. You have to do it in person. I asked about faxing something in, but you have to read and sign a release and need photo id verifications.

Take Hwy 24 west to Divide.
Turn right at the light in center of town (County Rd 5).
Bear left at 0.5 miles onto County Rd. 51.
Go another 2.9 miles and bear right, still on CR 51.
There is a parking staging area at 6.7 miles further on.
Just after the parking area make a left on F.S. 360.
Metberry is another 7.7 miles.

Total distance is about 48 miles.

These directions are from Chuck Wells' book.

Dirty work it was....

Just barely made it up there in time. Didn't realize how much driving at slow speeds I would be doing.

Our task for the day was to build dams in a couple of washouts. The washouts were huge! The 1st washout already had dams but we had to widen and heighten them. We used trees cut down from the area, and of course all of them were charred. So anything they touched they turned black. My wife found it quite funny when I got home. There was another washout further down the road where we had to build new dams, about 8 of them. I left after 4 of these were built as it was already 3:30 and I had to get home.

Funny side note. The second washout was right next to the trail. Supposedly some greenpeace peeps took pics of the washout and tried to make it look like it was the trail and vehicular traffic was doing the damage. Only issue is that the trail could be seen in the background . Idiots.

The work was very hard and very dirty. It was cool to get up there and do some work and see the area and the damage that was done. I meant to take pics but left the camera at home, so you will just have to make mental pictures

I have no idea. No one from the forest service was there. I don't know what needs to be done in order to open them.
