Tire tread question, what does 8/32 mean?

Saw a posting online, a guy is selling a set o Michelin LTX M/S with 8/32 tread. So what does 8/32 mean, do they still have more than 70 to 80 precent lef; and how many miles can I expect from them?

Check the specs at michelin's website or tirerack to figure out what the starting tread depth was

Depending on which LTX it is, the original tread depth may vary, but the ones I just looked up list 14/32, which is probably close.

If that's the case, 8/32 is 57% tread. But realize that anything below 3/32 or so is getting pretty bald, in which case, there is roughly 45% of useable tread left.

Went to Michelin site, the LTX M/S original tread is 12/38, if that is the case, would it be correct to say they should have around 70% tread left.
