Double cruiser rollover..........

Howdy folks,

Sorry about the short life of the last time that I posted this, but I was wisely advised by some forum members to take the pics down until everything blew over.

Story is: I sold my 1969 pig to USMCruiser, and was going to meet him in Salt lake so he could drive it back to CO. I rented a Uh@#L trailer, put the pig on it and off I went with my three year old riding shotgun. I was also doing a parts run from my condemned 76 pig, so I had an Axle, tranny and case, 4 doors, two fenders, a tailgate, rear springs, driveshafts and some misc smaller parts loaded into the back of the 80.

We stopped in Boise to talk to LXCRSR, and hit the road about midnight. around 0240, I stopped for gas in Burley, ID, did a quick equipment check and got back on the road. less than a mile down the road(wasn't even close to the next exit) I felt a nasty thump and jolt and saw sparks in my mirror. I downshifted from 3rd to 2nd and let off the gas, but the pig was doing the death wobble because UH@$L trailers don't have straps that compress the suspension on the towed vehicle(two susp working against each other).

So anyway, things started to straighten out a bit, but the tongue of the trailer had swung up underneath the 80 and lodged between the frame rail and the right rear wheel. This broke alll of my wheel studs off and I promptly lost that tire.

That sent me into a passenger side skid toward the median, and if I was traveling toward 12 o'clock, I hit the median pointing to about 8 o'clock. The 80 went right over and then over again, leaving us upside down. The pig stayed with the trailer and went over once and they landed on their wheels as a unit.

UH@#L settled with me to avoid a suit, but beware of deferred maintenance on Uh@#L equipment, this is not the first time I have seen under maintained and faulty equipment rented out as mission capable.

So, I got hit in the head by a door, mild concussion, and my daughter was completely unhurt. God is good.

Pics for your viewing displeasure:

and more,

Note the first pic you can see the sunroof motor bulging out of the headliner, that motor left a divet in the leather of the passenger headreast. While we where upside down the roof was supported by that headrest.......

last ones..

Also note the patch welded onto the side of the tongue. all of their car trailers had this, but it wasn't possible to see the already present crack in the base metal (rust) while the patch was still holding.

The only panel to survive on the pig was the driver side fender.....everything else was tweaked or broken...

Also stopped for some mild snow wheeling in New meadows on the way back...

Wow! very very unfourtunate, im glad to hear that the little one escaped unharmed! I have a similar incident with faulty Uhaul equipment. We rented a "front wheel trailer" to tow my VW jetta . The hitch failed in the same location, chains broke and my brokedown jetta flipped countless times, totaled. Uhaul paid for everything. I will never ever ever rent from Uhaul ever again. I sugesst that no one does.

Nah, I was too far from home and too pissed off to worry about that, I gave the 80 carcass to PHAEDRUS (thanks again for all the help) and let the insurance have the pig.

I am honestly amazed that the two of you are alive - this is the kind of thing that would 'get you religion' pretty fast. I'm actually amazed that you weren't killed by all the gear in the back - was it strapped down at least?

How close were you to the tow limit / max GVW?

PS You should never have a kid that age riding in the front seat.

Holy crap, the collapsing thread returns.

Once again, super glad you and your girl are relatively unhurt, that's what matters, the rest is just metal.

Hope you got plenty for your loss, inconvenience, etc.

With all the spairs in the rear of the 80 you are so lucky you weren't hit by any of it . Good to hear it worked out.

Well, the gear still had forward inertia, and since we hit pointing toward 8 o'clock and continued around the clock face until we stopped at about 5:30, the gear was pushing toward the rear of the cruiser.

She doesn't usually ride up front, but this is a pre passenger airbag rig, and where else was she gonna ride?

FWIW, the reccomendation that kids be in back is all well and good, but cars these days are designed to protect the front of the cab first, as very few vehicles crash when only the back seats are occupied. With out an airbag, they are just as safe in the front as anywhere else except for a headon with a semi, and then everybody is pretty much done for anyway.

Thanks to all for the comments, I am very thankful to be alive. I already
"had religion" so this just reinforced it.

Dan

Thank the Lord in Heaven that you all are OK! Now, I'm certainly not asking for an amount, but did you get enough to replace your cruisers? I hope so. Since you are all ok, we can think of such things. I hope you're able to get cruiser poor again soon.

Thank you so much for sharing. Graphic reminders of hazards associated with moving and towing stuff. So awesome that you and your daughter came through. Sad to see the carnage but as others have said....the damage to the vehicles is trivial...

Yikes.....

Those are incredible pics -- the main thing is you and your co-pilot are fine, although shaken I am sure !

'You-halll' is someone to be careful with. W-5 (which is the Cdn equvialent of 60 Minutes) has done features and follow-ups about the poor quality and lack of maintenance on its vehicles. Lots of cases where settlement is the order of the day to keep it hush-hush.

I am sure there are reputable You-hall reps out there, but man.... scary stuff when large equipment fails.

Sorry for the loss, too.

Greatest piece of news in this whole thread is that you and your daughter are fine after a horrific accident. Personal property can be replaced. Loved ones and friends can't.
