Conflict over the Car

Rachelle says it's time for her husband, Matt, to say goodbye to his new testosterone toy and trade it in for something that the whole family can ride in. Matt says he should be able to have a car he enjoys driving.

"I bought a Jeep and my wife, Rachelle, hates it," says Matt. "I thought that it was time for me to have a vehicle that I enjoyed."

"Matt should get rid of the Jeep. It's not practical. We have three children. We bought the minivan to fit the children all in car seats. We cannot fit all three of them in the Jeep," says Rachelle. "When we had the twins, we traded in our cool cars, and we went for the minivan ... What do I have cool to drive? I think that he thinks I just love to drive my minivan." Rachelle also dislikes the Jeep because it's hard for her to drive. "It's just not fun."

Rachelle says that Matt already has his boy toy, a motorcycle. "I think that Matt just doesn't think about anything else but Matt," she shares, noting that Matt bought the Jeep without her consent. "He and his mother purchased the Jeep, and he brought it home, and I was ticked."

Rachelle thinks the Jeep should go, but Matt wants to keep it. He asks Dr. Phil, "What do you think?"

Dr. Phil asks the audience to applaud for whom they think is right. The audience is divided in half. "This one was tougher for me," Dr. Phil admits. He tells the couple that he thinks Rachelle is right, but Robin agrees with Matt. "Are you surprised?" he asks the couple.

"No, not really," Matt says. "In this case, I think that probably Rachelle is right, because of some of the points that she's made recently."

"First off, I have a Jeep, and I love it," Dr. Phil tells Matt. He explains why he thinks Rachelle is right. "You do have three kids, and you have another toy. If you didn't have another toy, it might have pushed me over the line. But you've got another toy, and you could convert either one of those toys into another car that both people could drive, all three kids could be strapped safely in the back seat of." Dr. Phil also brings up the fact that Matt bought it without talking it over with Rachelle.

"We did talk about it," Rachelle says. "I said, 'No.'"

"Oh, and then you went and did it anyway," Dr. Phil says to Matt.

"He drove up in the driveway the next day with it," Rachelle explains.

"It was a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing," Matt says. He acknowledges, "What we should look at is something that is fun for maybe both of us, instead of just me."

"Which is what I said a year-and-a-half ago," Rachelle chimes in with a smile.

"You need to sell one of those, get something that makes her happy, and then you're going to have a lot better ride in life," Dr. Phil jovially says to Matt.



Who knew Dr. Phil had a Jeep and he loves it.

No wonder I don't watch him.
