Spicy Fish Balls

Tried a new noodle joint in Chinatown today.

I had spicy fish balls, stewed beef, pork skin, mushrooms and some greens.

My buddy had fish cake, fried gluten, chicken wings and beef tongue.

We opted to pass on the pig's blood, beef stomach and some other "delicacies."

This place was pretty hard core.

Seems like fish balls, by nature, would be pretty tiny.

sounds like you two were daring each other to eat the most hardcore item on the menu.

Although I like meatballs...I tend to shy away from chinese and southeast asian versions of meatballs in general...never know what you'll find in there.

Regardless of how it looks/sounds, I bet it was pretty tasty.

Back when I was at school in Pasadena, I had a Taiwanese girl friend take me to the most "authentic" Chinese place in town. It turned out to be a cafe attached to a Chinese supermarket called "Ranch 99", a staple in Chinese neighborhoods. I ordered a kind of gross, mucusy duck dish on rice that, while overcooked, also managed to somehow be undercooked, with a side of really nasty cabbage that tasted kind of rancid...not pickled, just kind of left out a day too long. I picked at it for a while, managed a few bites, then gave up. As I sat there digesting the few bites, I immediately started to feel queezy.
"Don't like it?" she asked.
"Uh....well....I guess it's just not my thing."
"Yeah, this place isn't really that good."
"Then why the fuck did you suggest it?"
"You said you wanted 'authentic' food. Well, this is pretty fuckin' authentic."
"Yeah, but I don't see how you'd imagine I'd want to eat crappy food."
"C'mon, it's not that bad."
"I'm fuckin' dying here."

So she suggested we go to a soup place that, while still fairly authentic for the most part, was a good restaurant and very clean. The menu was mostly in Chinese with English in very few spots, and didn't give accurate descriptions of the dishes. They had English names like "TWO BLADE OF GRASS SOUP" or "SO MANY ANT CLIMB HILL" or "TWO BIRD IN TREE CALL OUT", so I had the "RAINBOW OF MEAT SOUP" on my friend's suggestion. No, I'm not fucking kidding. Neither were they! The name of the dish turned out to be pretty accurate, because there was every goddamn animal known to man in this huge bowl, sunk into a delicious broth with noodles, cabbage, green onions, mushrooms, and whole bits of garlic. A veritable holistic spectrum of mammal, fish, and bird product were contained inside: chicken, quail's eggs, beef, ox tail, octopus, squid (or cuttlefish), nondescript white fish,"river fish" stomach, fish fucking eyeballs, pollock, shrimp, some kind of roe, and mussels.

What was cool was that the broth was so murky that you would plunge into the soup with the chopsticks, and you had NO FUCKING IDEA what you were gonna come out with! A few of the items floated, so they were easy to spot, but for the most part you'd have to knock around blindly in this bowl, snatch up or spear something that wasn't immediately slippery enough to get away, and out it would come for inspection, verification, and possible ingestion.

It was actually quite good, with the exception of fish eyeballs, which tasted like some kind of cruel joke. I was expecting them to be fishy. I wasn't expecting them to taste like dirty motor oil and contain some kind of sandy substance.

"If you want to be Chinese, you gotta eat some nasty stuff."

very funny, although as you may notice that wasn't the topic discussed...

I'm quite impressed with your obvious knowledge of mammal anatomy, though!

still was a lame joke...

shoot, actually, according to my recent research (yes, I search outside of Mud , there is some serious evidence (read: it's on the Web ) that a whale penis is not called a dork, it being an "urban legend chuckled about mostly in primary schools" or something like that...

(I did look it up in the Oxford Dictionary too, btw)

I thought I had learned something new, dang...

but that about does it for my interest in the matter..
